Brown viscous discharge
Hello, over the past two days, I thought my menstrual period had ended (and I no longer needed to use sanitary pads).
On the evening after my period ended, I took two warm water sitz baths.
This morning, about two hours after the sitz bath, I noticed a small amount of brown, sticky discharge on my underwear, with a slight odor that is only detectable up close, somewhat resembling a mixture of menstrual blood and urine.
Currently, I do not feel any discomfort in my uterus, vagina, or vulva, and I plan to stop the sitz baths for now.
Is this type of discharge normal? Could taking two sitz baths without any discharge lead to an infection? Thank you for your response, doctor!

Hello, the likelihood of infection should be low.
If you experience any discomfort, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
The presence of brown sticky discharge after menstruation can be concerning for many individuals, and understanding the underlying causes is essential for reassurance and proper management. Based on the information provided, it seems that you experienced a brown discharge a day after your menstrual period ended, which is often a common occurrence.
Firstly, it's important to note that brown discharge typically indicates old blood that is taking longer to exit the body. This can happen at the end of a menstrual cycle when the flow is tapering off. The discharge may appear brown due to oxidation, which occurs when blood is exposed to air for a longer period. This is generally considered normal and is not usually a cause for concern, especially if it is not accompanied by other symptoms such as significant pain, itching, or a strong odor.
In your case, the brown discharge you observed after a warm sitz bath could be a continuation of your menstrual cycle. The warm water may have helped relax the muscles of the uterus, potentially allowing any remaining blood to be expelled. The slight odor you mentioned, which resembles a mix of menstrual blood and urine, could be due to the nature of the discharge itself, especially if it is old blood. However, if the odor becomes stronger or is accompanied by other symptoms, it may warrant further investigation.
Regarding your concern about the possibility of infection from sitting in warm water, it is generally safe to take sitz baths, especially if you are not experiencing any discomfort or signs of infection (such as itching, burning, or unusual discharge). However, it is crucial to ensure that the water is clean and that you do not sit in it for prolonged periods. If you notice any changes in your discharge, such as an increase in volume, a change in color to yellow or green, or a foul odor, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, the brown sticky discharge you are experiencing after your menstrual period is likely normal, especially if it is not accompanied by any other concerning symptoms. It is essential to monitor your body for any changes and to maintain good hygiene practices. If you have any doubts or if the discharge persists or worsens, seeking medical advice is always a prudent course of action. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed early on.
