Does cataract cause visual distortion?

Following up on question 197258, I have already visited the ophthalmology department at Mackay Memorial Hospital for an examination.
The doctor performed a dilated fundus examination and concluded that my cataracts are causing a wavy distortion in the appearance of the tiled floor (as the distortion is not centered).
However, my cataracts are indeed located in the center.
Can cataracts cause a distorted view of the tiled floor? I also asked the doctor if I needed any additional tests, and the doctor replied that none were necessary, advising me to return for a follow-up in six months.
The doctor prescribed cataract eye drops to be used twice daily and mentioned that I could purchase more from the pharmacy once I ran out.
Are there any long-term side effects associated with using these eye drops? The name of the eye drops is: Corning Unisight.
Thank you for your response, doctor.

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello: The doctor has informed you that cataracts may be the cause of the distortion you perceive in the tiles.
Typically, cataracts affect the transparency of the lens, which in turn impacts the proper focusing of light.
This can lead to distorted, blurred, or wavy images.
Although your cataract may be located in the center of the eye, this type of visual distortion can occur in any area and is not necessarily limited to the center.
The doctor recommends a follow-up in six months and has prescribed cataract eye drops for you to use.
There should be no issues; you can follow up as scheduled.
Corning Unis is a medication used for treating cataracts, and the local application of such medications generally has fewer side effects and can be used long-term, unless you experience discomfort in your eyes after use.

Cataracts can indeed cause visual distortions, including the perception of wavy or distorted patterns. This phenomenon occurs due to the clouding of the lens in the eye, which can affect how light is refracted and focused onto the retina. When light passes through a cataract, it may scatter or bend in unpredictable ways, leading to visual distortions such as wavy lines or patterns that appear altered. This is particularly noticeable when viewing objects with straight lines or grids, such as tiled floors or graph paper, where the distortion can manifest as a wave-like appearance.

In your case, the fact that the distortion is not centered could be attributed to the specific location and density of the cataract within your lens. Cataracts can develop in various forms and locations, and their impact on vision can vary widely from person to person. It is also important to note that the degree of distortion may not correlate directly with the severity of the cataract; even a mild cataract can cause significant visual changes depending on its characteristics.

Regarding your follow-up with the ophthalmologist, it is common practice for doctors to recommend regular monitoring of cataracts, especially if they are not yet significantly impairing your daily activities. The prescribed eye drops, such as "Korin Yuni," are typically used to manage symptoms associated with cataracts, such as inflammation or discomfort. Long-term use of these drops is generally safe, but it is essential to follow your doctor's instructions regarding their use. If you experience any unusual side effects or if your symptoms worsen, you should contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In terms of additional testing, your ophthalmologist may have determined that your current symptoms and the state of your cataracts do not warrant further investigation at this time. However, if you notice any changes in your vision or if the distortions become more pronounced, it is advisable to seek a re-evaluation. Cataracts can progress over time, and if they begin to significantly affect your quality of life, surgical intervention may be considered.

In summary, cataracts can indeed cause visual distortions, including the wavy appearance of patterns. Regular monitoring and following your doctor's recommendations regarding treatment and follow-up appointments are crucial for managing your condition. If you have any concerns about the eye drops or your symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your ophthalmologist for clarification and guidance.
