Tonsillitis
Hello, doctor.
I was diagnosed with COVID-19 last week, and after recovering, I have been experiencing a sensation of a foreign body on one side of my throat when swallowing.
I used a flashlight to look at my throat and noticed that one side of my tonsil is slightly swollen.
When I went for a consultation, the doctor said it was inflammation and prescribed me clindamycin and lysozyme, as well as lobak and bigacon.
The indications for the latter two medications are muscle stiffness and gastric ulcers, respectively.
Could you please explain why the doctor prescribed lobak and bigacon? Thank you.

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, Lobak contains analgesic and muscle relaxant ingredients, which can be used to relieve symptoms such as sore throat or muscle soreness.
Bigacon is a type of antacid used to alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux or stomach pain caused by medication.
If you have concerns about medication use, you can return to the original clinic for consultation with a physician.

More Info
Tonsillitis, or inflammation of the tonsils, can occur after a COVID-19 infection due to various factors, including viral or bacterial infections that may arise as a complication. The symptoms you are experiencing, such as the sensation of a foreign body in the throat and unilateral tonsillar swelling, suggest that your tonsils are indeed inflamed. Your doctor’s prescription of clindamycin and lysozyme is a common approach to manage such infections, as clindamycin is an antibiotic effective against certain bacteria, while lysozyme can help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
Regarding the additional medications, Lobak (which contains the active ingredient baclofen) and Bigacon (which contains the active ingredient simethicone), their inclusion in your treatment regimen may seem unusual at first glance, given their typical indications for muscle spasms and gastrointestinal issues, respectively. However, there are plausible explanations for their use in your case.
1. Lobak (Baclofen): Baclofen is a muscle relaxant that is often used to treat muscle spasticity. In the context of tonsillitis, it may have been prescribed to alleviate any muscle tension or spasms in the throat area that could be contributing to your discomfort while swallowing. Inflammation in the throat can lead to muscle tightness, and by relaxing these muscles, baclofen can help ease the sensation of tightness or discomfort associated with swallowing.
2. Bigacon (Simethicone): Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent that helps reduce bloating and discomfort caused by gas in the gastrointestinal tract. While it may not directly address the tonsillitis, it could be prescribed to manage any gastrointestinal discomfort you might be experiencing as a side effect of the illness or the medications you are taking. Sometimes, infections and the stress they cause can lead to digestive issues, and simethicone can help alleviate these symptoms.
In summary, while Lobak and Bigacon are not standard treatments for tonsillitis, their use in your case may be aimed at addressing associated symptoms that could be exacerbating your overall discomfort. It is essential to follow your doctor's instructions and complete the prescribed course of antibiotics and supportive medications. If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience new symptoms, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
Additionally, it is worth noting that post-viral syndromes, including lingering throat discomfort, can occur after COVID-19. This phenomenon is part of a broader spectrum of post-viral syndromes that can affect various systems in the body. Therefore, monitoring your symptoms and maintaining communication with your healthcare provider is essential for ensuring a full recovery. If you have any concerns about the medications or your symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for clarification and guidance.
