Peeling of the glans penis?
Hello Dr.
Du, since yesterday I've noticed white flakes on the glans, which upon closer inspection appear to be peeling skin.
I made sure to wash it thoroughly while showering, but to my surprise, it started peeling again after one or two hours.
Although there is no pain or itching, I am still very concerned that it might be a sexually transmitted infection.

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: It is important to keep the area dry when experiencing flaking skin.
If it becomes wet, gently pat it dry without excessive cleaning.
If there is no improvement, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.
If there has been no engagement in unsafe sexual practices, it is unlikely to be a sexually transmitted infection, so there is no need to worry.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Understanding glans peeling can indeed be concerning, especially when it presents as white flakes or peeling skin on the glans (the head of the penis). While sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a common worry, there are several other potential causes for this condition that are important to consider.
Common Causes of Glans Peeling
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: One of the most common reasons for peeling skin on the glans is irritation or an allergic reaction. This could be due to soaps, lotions, or other personal care products that may not be suitable for sensitive skin. Even laundry detergents or fabric softeners can sometimes cause irritation.
2. Fungal Infections: Conditions such as candidiasis (a yeast infection) can lead to peeling skin. This is particularly common in warm, moist areas of the body. If there is a white, cottage cheese-like discharge, it may indicate a fungal infection.
3. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, which can be caused by poor hygiene, infections, or skin conditions. Symptoms often include redness, swelling, and peeling skin.
4. Psoriasis or Eczema: These chronic skin conditions can affect the genital area, leading to symptoms such as peeling, redness, and irritation. Psoriasis, in particular, can cause thick, silvery scales, while eczema may result in dry, itchy patches.
5. Lichen Sclerosus: This is a chronic skin condition that can cause white patches and peeling skin on the glans. It is more common in men and can lead to scarring if not treated.
6. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): While you mentioned that you are concerned about STDs, it’s worth noting that some STIs can cause symptoms that include peeling skin. For example, herpes can cause lesions that may peel as they heal.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Since you mentioned that the peeling is not accompanied by pain or itching, it may not be an immediate cause for alarm. However, it is essential to monitor the situation. Here are some guidelines on when to seek medical attention:
- If the peeling persists for more than a few days without improvement.
- If you notice any additional symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, or discharge.
- If you have any concerns about potential STDs, especially if you have had unprotected sexual contact.
Diagnosis and Treatment
A healthcare provider will typically perform a physical examination and may ask about your medical history, hygiene practices, and any recent changes in products used. In some cases, a swab or biopsy may be necessary to determine the underlying cause.
Treatment will depend on the diagnosis. For example:
- For irritation or allergic reactions, switching to hypoallergenic products may be recommended.
- For fungal infections, antifungal creams or medications may be prescribed.
- For inflammatory conditions like balanitis or psoriasis, topical steroids or other medications may be necessary.
Conclusion
While glans peeling can be concerning, it is often due to non-STD-related causes. Maintaining good hygiene, avoiding irritants, and monitoring the condition are essential steps. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare provider is advisable to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Remember, early intervention can help prevent complications and provide peace of mind.
