Peeling of the glans... please help ><
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about the issue of peeling skin on the glans.
I have had this problem since middle school.
Initially, the peeling was very slow and occurred near the urethral opening, with only a small area affected.
Over time, the area of peeling has expanded.
The affected areas appear white or red after peeling, but there is no pain.
There are no abnormalities in other parts of my body.
I had oral sexual contact about 14 months ago.
I hope you can help me with my issue.
I just want to know if I have balanitis or another condition.
Additionally, I would like to know what health impacts balanitis may have.
Thank you.
Tony, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/01/16

More Info
Glans peeling, or the peeling of the skin on the glans penis, can be a concerning issue for many individuals. Understanding the potential causes, symptoms, and health implications is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment. Based on your description, it seems you have been experiencing this condition for quite some time, with gradual changes in the affected area.
Causes of Glans Peeling
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: One of the most common causes of glans peeling is irritation from soaps, lotions, or other personal care products. Allergic reactions to latex condoms or lubricants can also lead to skin changes.
2. Infections: Conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) can result from fungal infections (like Candida), bacterial infections, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Given your history of sexual contact, it is essential to consider the possibility of an STI, although you mentioned no pain or discomfort.
3. Dermatological Conditions: Skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can also affect the genital area, leading to peeling skin. These conditions often present with redness and flaking but may not always be painful.
4. Phimosis: If the foreskin is too tight, it can cause irritation and peeling of the glans, especially during erections or sexual activity.
5. Lichen Sclerosus: This is a chronic skin condition that can affect the genital area, causing white patches and peeling skin. It is more common in men who are uncircumcised.
Symptoms
You mentioned that the peeling area appears white or red and that there is no pain. This is a crucial observation, as the absence of pain may suggest a non-infectious cause. However, if you notice any additional symptoms such as itching, burning, or discharge, it could indicate an infection or another underlying condition.
Health Implications
While glans peeling itself may not pose a significant health risk, it can be a symptom of an underlying condition that requires attention. For instance:
- Infections: If caused by an infection, untreated conditions like balanitis can lead to complications, including scarring or recurrent infections.
- STIs: If the peeling is related to an STI, it is crucial to seek treatment not only for your health but also to prevent transmission to partners.
- Chronic Conditions: Skin conditions like psoriasis or lichen sclerosus can lead to long-term issues if not managed properly.
Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given your history and the persistence of the symptoms, it is advisable to consult a urologist or dermatologist. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to determine the underlying cause.
2. Avoid Irritants: In the meantime, avoid using any new soaps, lotions, or products on the genital area that may cause irritation. Stick to mild, unscented products.
3. Practice Good Hygiene: Ensure proper hygiene by gently cleaning the area with warm water and avoiding excessive scrubbing, which can worsen irritation.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in the peeling, such as increased redness, pain, or discharge, and report these to your healthcare provider.
In summary, while glans peeling can be caused by various factors, it is essential to identify the underlying cause to ensure appropriate treatment. Consulting a healthcare professional will provide you with the best course of action and peace of mind regarding your health.
