Intermenstrual bleeding and pregnancy testing issues?

The last menstrual period started on June 8, with previous cycles ranging between 29 to 31 days.
The next period was expected around July 6, but it did not arrive by July 10.
Sexual intercourse occurred on June 10 (with condoms used throughout, but not checked for leaks afterward).
On June 24, there was a small amount of brown discharge that lasted for one day, which had not happened before.
A pregnancy test taken on the afternoon of June 29 showed one line.
On July 4, there was a sudden increase in discharge (watery, causing wetness in underwear).
By July 6, the discharge was less, but still present, and there was itching, especially after midnight.
A second pregnancy test was conducted on July 10 using morning urine, which also showed one line.
Recently, there has been breast tenderness and lower back pain, and a few days ago, there was a feeling of abdominal bloating, which has since resolved.
Can pregnancy be ruled out in this situation? Is it possible that the pregnancy tests are inaccurate given the time since intercourse? Is the non-menstrual bleeding indicative of ovulation bleeding, or could it be something else since this has never occurred before? Is the watery discharge a sign of a vaginal infection or an early sign of pregnancy? Previously, there was an infection of the urethra; could this affect the risk of infection in the genital area? (There has also been frequent late nights recently.) I apologize for the many questions, thank you, doctor.

1.
If there is a possibility of pregnancy from recent sexual intercourse, a urine test can confirm pregnancy approximately two weeks after the event.

2.
Ovulation bleeding is just one of the causes of intermenstrual bleeding.

3.
Watery discharge may indicate ovulation or an infection, but it is not a sign of pregnancy.

4.
Urethritis and vaginitis are closely related and often occur together.

Understanding irregular bleeding and pregnancy testing concerns can be quite complex, especially when various symptoms and circumstances are involved. Based on the details you've provided, let's break down your situation and address your concerns systematically.

1. Irregular Bleeding and Timing: You mentioned that your last menstrual period started on June 8, and you expected your next period around July 6. The occurrence of brown discharge on June 24, which lasted for a day, could be attributed to several factors. Brown discharge often indicates old blood, which can be a normal part of the menstrual cycle or could signify implantation bleeding if pregnancy has occurred. However, since you had a negative pregnancy test on June 29, it is less likely that this was implantation bleeding.

2. Pregnancy Testing Accuracy: Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when used correctly. They measure the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in urine, which typically becomes detectable around the time of a missed period. Since you had a negative test on June 29 and again on July 10, it suggests that you are likely not pregnant, especially considering that you had unprotected intercourse on June 10. However, if your cycles are irregular, it’s possible that ovulation occurred later than expected, which could affect the timing of hCG production.

3. Non-Menstrual Bleeding: The increase in watery discharge and the presence of itching could indicate a vaginal infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection, rather than a sign of pregnancy. These infections can cause changes in discharge consistency and may lead to discomfort. Given your history of urinary tract infections, it’s possible that your vaginal flora has been affected, leading to these symptoms.

4. Symptoms of Pregnancy vs. Other Conditions: Symptoms like breast tenderness, lower back pain, and abdominal bloating can occur due to hormonal fluctuations related to your menstrual cycle or due to premenstrual syndrome (PMS). These symptoms are not exclusive to pregnancy and can be influenced by various factors, including stress, diet, and sleep patterns. The fact that your bloating has subsided may indicate that your body is adjusting to hormonal changes rather than indicating pregnancy.

5. Follow-Up Actions: If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you continue to experience unusual discharge, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a pelvic examination and possibly order tests to rule out infections or other underlying conditions. If you are still concerned about pregnancy, a blood test for hCG can provide a more definitive answer than a urine test, as it can detect lower levels of the hormone.

6. Lifestyle Factors: You mentioned that you have been staying up late, which can affect your hormonal balance and overall health. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule, managing stress, and ensuring a balanced diet can help regulate your menstrual cycle and improve your overall well-being.

In summary, while your symptoms and test results suggest that pregnancy is unlikely, it is essential to monitor your health and consult a healthcare professional if you have ongoing concerns. They can provide personalized advice and treatment options based on a thorough evaluation of your symptoms and medical history.
