Left-sided throat lymphadenopathy + nausea + medication issues?
In the past six months, I have experienced frequent warmth, swelling, and a foreign body sensation in the left inner side of my jaw lymph nodes, which feel slightly larger than those on the right side.
This is accompanied by nausea, but my stomach does not feel uncomfortable, and I occasionally experience constipation.
I consulted a gastroenterologist who indicated that the primary issue is related to the ear, nose, and throat, and prescribed MOPRIDE 5MG (Mosapride) to be taken three times a day for seven days.
I then visited an otolaryngologist, who observed some inflammation in my throat and attributed it to gastrointestinal issues, prescribing the same medication for another seven days.
Can you please advise where the problem might lie, and is it safe to take this medication for a total of 14 days?

Dr. Lin Minghui reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Enlargement of the throat requires evaluation by an otolaryngologist to rule out issues such as tumors and to consider local treatment.
Pharyngitis may be accompanied by nausea.
Chronic pharyngitis necessitates identifying the underlying cause, which could be due to gastroesophageal reflux or laryngopharyngeal reflux.
Mosapride is a gastrointestinal prokinetic agent that can be taken for up to 14 days if needed.
Side effects include diarrhea, and it may interact with medications for arrhythmias.
Follow-up with a specialist is recommended.
Wishing you good health!

It sounds like you are experiencing a complex set of symptoms that may be related to an underlying issue with your lymphatic system, particularly on the left side of your throat. The persistent swelling and discomfort in your left submandibular lymph nodes, along with nausea and a sensation of an obstruction, could indicate several potential causes.
Firstly, lymph nodes can become enlarged due to infections, inflammatory conditions, or malignancies. Given that you have noted the left lymph node is more prominent and painful compared to the right, it is essential to consider that this could be a localized response to an infection, such as a viral or bacterial infection affecting the throat or oral cavity. The inflammation you mentioned in your throat could be a sign of pharyngitis or tonsillitis, which can lead to lymphadenopathy (swelling of the lymph nodes).
The nausea you are experiencing might be related to the lymphatic involvement or could be a separate gastrointestinal issue. It's not uncommon for throat problems to cause referred sensations in the stomach, leading to nausea. The fact that you have been prescribed Mosapride (MOPRIDE) suggests that your healthcare provider is considering a gastrointestinal component to your symptoms, as Mosapride is a prokinetic agent that helps with gastric motility and can alleviate nausea.
Regarding your question about the duration of medication, Mosapride is generally considered safe for short-term use, but taking it continuously for 14 days should be done under the guidance of a healthcare professional. If you have already taken it for 7 days and are considering extending it, it is crucial to consult with your doctor. They can assess whether the benefits of continuing the medication outweigh any potential risks or side effects.
In terms of next steps, it would be advisable to follow up with your ENT specialist or a primary care physician. They may recommend further investigations, such as blood tests, imaging studies (like an ultrasound of the neck), or even a biopsy of the lymph node if there is a concern for malignancy. It's also important to monitor your symptoms closely; if you experience worsening pain, fever, or any new symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, your symptoms could stem from a variety of causes, including infections, inflammatory conditions, or other underlying issues. Continuing the medication without further evaluation may not be the best course of action, so please consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and management.
