My nipple looks strange?

I am currently 16 years old, and I don't understand why my breasts are developing normally, but my nipples haven't fully emerged.
Sometimes they do protrude, but most of the time they are inverted.
I'm not sure what to do about this.

Hao, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/08/01

Dr. Yuan Tianmin reply Breast and Thyroid

In most cases, during breast development, the nipples may be inverted.
It is important to regularly pull them outward, as this may improve the condition.
This will help ensure that the baby can find the nipple for breastfeeding in the future.

Inverted nipples, or nipples that appear to be pulled inward rather than protruding outward, can be a source of concern for many individuals, especially during the developmental years of adolescence. At 16 years old, it is important to understand that breast and nipple development can vary significantly from person to person. This variation is influenced by several factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, and overall body composition.

Firstly, it is essential to recognize that breast development typically occurs in stages, and the appearance of the nipples can change throughout this process. During puberty, hormonal fluctuations can lead to changes in breast tissue and nipple shape. In some cases, inverted nipples may be a natural variation and not necessarily a cause for concern. However, if the inversion is new or accompanied by other symptoms, it may warrant further investigation.

Inverted nipples can be classified into two categories: congenital (present from birth) and acquired (developing later in life). Congenital inverted nipples are often due to the anatomical structure of the breast tissue and may not require treatment unless they cause discomfort or issues with breastfeeding in the future. Acquired inverted nipples, on the other hand, can result from various factors, including hormonal changes, trauma, infections, or underlying medical conditions.

If you are experiencing inverted nipples, here are some steps you can take:
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: It is advisable to speak with a healthcare provider, such as a gynecologist or a breast specialist, who can evaluate your condition. They can provide a thorough examination and determine if any underlying issues need to be addressed.

2. Monitor Changes: Keep track of any changes in your breast and nipple appearance. Note if the inversion is consistent or if it varies with hormonal changes, such as during your menstrual cycle. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

3. Gentle Stimulation: Some individuals find that gentle stimulation of the nipples can encourage them to protrude. This can be done through gentle massage or using a breast pump. However, be cautious and avoid excessive force, as this can lead to discomfort or injury.

4. Consider Hormonal Factors: Hormonal imbalances can affect breast and nipple development. If you suspect that hormonal issues may be contributing to your inverted nipples, discuss this with your healthcare provider. They may recommend tests to assess your hormone levels.

5. Surgical Options: In cases where inverted nipples cause significant concern or discomfort, surgical options are available. Procedures can be performed to correct the inversion, but this is typically considered only after other options have been explored and if the individual is fully informed about the risks and benefits.

6. Emotional Support: It is also important to address any emotional concerns you may have regarding your body image. Speaking with a trusted friend, family member, or counselor can provide support during this time of development.

In conclusion, while inverted nipples can be a source of concern, they are often a normal variation in breast development. Monitoring changes, consulting with a healthcare professional, and considering gentle stimulation can help manage the situation. Remember that everyone's body develops at its own pace, and it is essential to prioritize your health and well-being above all. If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to seek professional advice.

Dr. Xie Wenhuai reply Breast and Thyroid
Nipple inversion is caused by the pulling of the breast ligaments and is generally not a cause for concern. In boys, it is even less of an issue. In girls, surgery is only considered if it is related to breastfeeding factors.
