Withdrawal from Wan You Ting (a medication)
I have been taking psychiatric medications for three to four years, including medications like Venlafaxine, Quetiapine, and Lamotrigine.
When I started preparing for pregnancy, I began to taper off the medications.
Half a month into the reduction, I found out I was pregnant, and I completely stopped the medications six days ago.
However, the withdrawal symptoms have been severe; initially, I experienced dizziness and vomiting.
Although I am no longer vomiting, I still feel extremely dizzy every day and very uncomfortable whenever I am awake.
I went to the hospital yesterday to adjust my medications, and the doctor prescribed medications safe for pregnant women, namely Clonazepam and Buspirone, but he mentioned they might not be effective.
If they don't work, I will have to rely on myself to get through this.
Currently, I am taking the alternative medications, but there has been no improvement.
Are there any other methods I can use to cope during the withdrawal period?

Dr. Qiu Junda reply Psychiatry
Hello.
Wan You Ting is an antidepressant that is theoretically non-addictive, so withdrawal symptoms should be minimal.
Dizziness and vomiting may be partially related to pregnancy.
If we consider the medication alone, you have been off it for six days, and you should see significant improvement in one to two weeks (there's no need to take Fan Duo Shan or Bi Si Ning to avoid complicating the situation).
Thank you.

More Info
Managing withdrawal symptoms during pregnancy can be a challenging and delicate process, especially for patients who have been on psychiatric medications for an extended period. It is essential to approach this situation with care, considering both the health of the mother and the developing fetus. Here’s a comprehensive guide to managing withdrawal symptoms during pregnancy, based on the information provided and general medical knowledge.
Understanding Withdrawal Symptoms
Withdrawal symptoms can occur when a person stops taking a medication they have been using for a long time. Common symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headaches, anxiety, and mood swings. In your case, you mentioned experiencing severe dizziness and nausea after stopping medications like Venlafaxine (万忧停), Clonazepam (永康绪), and Lamotrigine (伏癲寧). These symptoms can be exacerbated during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and the body's increased sensitivity.
Importance of Medical Supervision
First and foremost, it is crucial to work closely with your healthcare provider throughout this process. Since you are pregnant, any medication adjustments should be made under the guidance of both your psychiatrist and obstetrician. They can help you weigh the risks and benefits of continuing or adjusting your medication regimen during pregnancy.
Alternative Strategies for Managing Withdrawal Symptoms
1. Gradual Tapering: If you have not already done so, discuss with your doctor the possibility of a more gradual tapering schedule for your medications. This can help minimize withdrawal symptoms and make the transition smoother.
2. Hydration and Nutrition: Staying well-hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can help alleviate some withdrawal symptoms. Focus on consuming nutrient-rich foods that support both your health and the health of your baby. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can be beneficial.
3. Rest and Sleep Hygiene: Fatigue can worsen withdrawal symptoms. Prioritize rest and establish a calming bedtime routine to improve your sleep quality. Consider relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle yoga to help manage stress and promote better sleep.
4. Support Systems: Engage with support groups or counseling services for pregnant women experiencing similar challenges. Sharing experiences with others can provide emotional support and coping strategies.
5. Physical Activity: If your healthcare provider approves, gentle physical activity such as walking or prenatal yoga can help improve your mood and reduce anxiety. Exercise releases endorphins, which can help counteract some withdrawal symptoms.
6. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices such as mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery can help manage anxiety and improve your overall sense of well-being.
7. Medication Adjustments: Since your doctor prescribed medications like Buspirone (煩多閃) and Sertraline (比思寧), monitor their effects closely. It may take some time for these medications to reach their full efficacy. If you find that these medications are not helping, communicate this with your healthcare provider. They may consider alternative medications that are safe during pregnancy.
8. Regular Check-ups: Keep up with regular prenatal visits to monitor both your health and the development of your baby. This will also provide an opportunity to discuss any ongoing symptoms or concerns with your healthcare team.
Conclusion
Managing withdrawal symptoms during pregnancy requires a multifaceted approach that prioritizes both maternal and fetal health. It is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare providers and to explore various strategies to alleviate symptoms. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and there are resources and support systems available to help you navigate this challenging time. Always consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication or treatment plan.
