Menstrual discharge
Hello, for the past few years, I have noticed that about three days before my period starts, I see light pink discharge on the toilet paper after using the restroom, which turns brown when it gets on my underwear.
Towards the end of my period, I also notice brown discharge before it completely finishes.
I don't remember experiencing this during my student years; could it be due to aging? Is this type of premenstrual discharge normal?

Dr. Chen Zhiyu reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Discharge is related to female hormones.
If there is bleeding or discharge outside of menstruation accompanied by an odor, itching, or other symptoms, please seek medical attention promptly.
Thank you.

Understanding the changes in vaginal discharge, particularly the appearance of pink and brown discharge before menstruation, is a common concern among women. It is important to recognize that variations in discharge can be influenced by several factors, including hormonal changes, age, and overall reproductive health.
Firstly, it is quite normal for women to experience changes in discharge as they age. The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which fluctuate throughout the cycle. In the days leading up to menstruation, many women notice changes in their discharge, which can include a shift in color and consistency. Pink discharge, often described as light or faint, can occur due to a small amount of blood mixing with cervical mucus. This can happen as the body prepares for menstruation, and it is generally not a cause for concern.
Brown discharge, on the other hand, is typically older blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus. It is common to see brown discharge at the end of a menstrual period or just before it begins. The presence of brown discharge can also be a sign of hormonal fluctuations, especially if it occurs consistently before your period. In some cases, it may indicate the shedding of the uterine lining, which can happen as the body prepares for menstruation.
In your case, experiencing pink discharge three days before your period and brown discharge as your period ends can be considered normal, especially if this pattern has developed over the past few years. However, if you notice any significant changes in your cycle, such as an increase in the volume of discharge, a change in odor, or accompanying symptoms like itching or discomfort, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional. These could be signs of an infection or other underlying health issues that may require attention.
It is also worth noting that lifestyle factors, stress, and changes in weight can influence hormonal balance and, consequently, menstrual cycles. As women age, particularly as they approach their late 30s and 40s, they may experience more pronounced changes in their menstrual cycles due to perimenopause, which can lead to irregularities in discharge and bleeding patterns.
In summary, the presence of pink and brown discharge before menstruation can be a normal part of the menstrual cycle, particularly as you age. However, it is essential to monitor any changes and consult a healthcare provider if you have concerns about your reproductive health. Regular gynecological check-ups can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed early, allowing for better management of your menstrual health.
