Menstrual issues
Hello doctor, my period has come this month, but the flow is lighter than usual.
Today is the third day and the bleeding has decreased significantly.
I visited a gynecologist yesterday, where I had a urine test and an ultrasound.
The doctor mentioned that there is a phenomenon of menstrual shedding, which doesn't seem like pregnancy.
However, my menstrual blood is much less than usual, is bright red in color, and there are many small blood clots.
Sometimes there is a bit of discharge as well.
I would like to know if this is normal.

Abnormal menstrual flow can be concerning, and it’s essential to understand what might be happening in your body. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a lighter than usual menstrual flow, which has raised some questions about its normalcy.
Firstly, menstrual flow can vary significantly from month to month due to various factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, diet, exercise, and underlying health conditions. A lighter flow, especially if it is accompanied by bright red blood and small clots, can sometimes be a normal variation, but it can also indicate other issues that may need attention.
The presence of small blood clots in your menstrual flow can be common, especially during heavier days of menstruation. However, if you are noticing a significant change in your menstrual pattern—such as a decrease in flow or a change in color—it’s worth discussing further with your healthcare provider. The bright red color of your blood suggests that it is fresh, which is typically a good sign, but the presence of clots and the overall decrease in flow could indicate a few possibilities.
One potential cause for lighter menstrual flow could be hormonal imbalances. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or even changes related to perimenopause can lead to alterations in menstrual patterns. Stress and lifestyle changes can also impact your menstrual cycle, leading to lighter periods.
Another consideration is the possibility of pregnancy, even if your doctor has indicated that it does not seem likely. Early pregnancy can sometimes present with lighter bleeding or spotting, which can be mistaken for a lighter period. If there is any chance of pregnancy, it may be worth taking a home pregnancy test for confirmation.
In your case, since you have already consulted with a gynecologist and undergone a urine test and ultrasound, it’s essential to follow their recommendations. If they have indicated that the findings are not concerning, it may be a matter of monitoring your cycle for any further changes. However, if you continue to experience lighter periods, significant changes in flow, or any additional symptoms such as severe pain, fatigue, or unusual discharge, you should seek further evaluation.
In summary, while variations in menstrual flow can be normal, significant changes warrant attention. Keep track of your menstrual cycle, noting any changes in flow, color, or associated symptoms. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms persist, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. They can help determine if any underlying conditions need to be addressed or if your menstrual changes are simply a normal variation.
