Wound healing issues?
Hello doctor, a month ago I had a mole removed from my right nostril and the stitches were taken out.
Recently, I've noticed that the wound is painful, and today after washing my face, it started to bleed (and it keeps bleeding a bit).
Should I have it re-stitched or just observe it for a while? Thank you.
Additionally, if the wound is very small but the bleeding won't stop, what should I do to stop the bleeding? Thank you.

When managing post-surgical wound healing, it is crucial to monitor the healing process closely and recognize when to seek medical assistance. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing some concerning symptoms following your mole removal surgery on the right side of your nose. The pain at the wound site and the recent bleeding after washing your face are significant indicators that warrant attention.
Firstly, it's important to understand that some level of discomfort can be expected after surgery, especially in the initial healing phase. However, persistent pain or sudden changes in the wound, such as bleeding, should not be ignored. The fact that you are experiencing bleeding that is "a bit continuous" is particularly concerning. In general, if a wound bleeds significantly or does not stop bleeding after applying pressure for about 10 minutes, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
In your case, since the bleeding occurred after washing your face, it could be due to irritation of the wound or possibly a disruption of the healing tissue. If the bleeding is minor and you can manage to apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or bandage, you might be able to control it at home. However, if the bleeding persists or worsens, or if you notice increased pain, swelling, or signs of infection (such as redness, warmth, or discharge), you should definitely consult your healthcare provider.
Regarding whether you need to have the wound re-stitched, this decision is best made by a medical professional. If the wound has opened up or if there is a significant gap, re-closure may be necessary to promote proper healing and minimize scarring. On the other hand, if the wound is small and the bleeding can be controlled, your doctor may recommend continued observation and care at home.
To manage minor bleeding at home, here are some steps you can take:
1. Apply Pressure: Use a clean cloth or sterile gauze to apply firm pressure directly to the bleeding area for at least 10 minutes without lifting to check if the bleeding has stopped.
2. Elevate the Area: If possible, keep your head elevated to reduce blood flow to the area, which can help minimize bleeding.
3. Avoid Irritation: Be gentle when washing your face and avoid any products that may irritate the wound. It may be wise to avoid washing the area until it has healed more.
4. Keep the Wound Clean: After the bleeding has stopped, gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and apply a clean bandage if necessary.
5. Monitor for Signs of Infection: Keep an eye on the wound for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical help.
In conclusion, while minor bleeding can often be managed at home, your symptoms suggest that it would be prudent to consult with your healthcare provider. They can assess the wound properly and determine whether further intervention is needed. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to post-surgical care. Your health and recovery are paramount, and timely medical advice can help ensure the best outcome.
