Storage of Eye Drops

Hello Doctor, I am currently using "Bausch + Lomb Soothe XP Eye Drops." I usually keep the eye drops on my desk in the room, but a few days ago, I turned on the air conditioning in the living room and closed the door to my room.
After about an hour, when I opened the door, I felt that the room was very stuffy.
When I used the eye drops that night, I noticed a slight stinging sensation.
I would like to ask if, under these circumstances, my eye drops could have degraded or gone bad? Should I stop using them immediately? Is there any way to determine if the eye drops have deteriorated? Thank you, Doctor.

Xiao En, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/09/23

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello: The "Bausch + Lomb Vistadex Eye Drops" should be stored in a refrigerated environment at 2-8°C, protected from light.
After opening, it can be stored at room temperature below 25°C and should be used within 8 weeks.
If not used within 8 weeks, please discard it.
Since it is difficult to determine if the medication has deteriorated, it is safer not to use it.

When it comes to storing eye drops, proper handling and storage are crucial to maintain their efficacy and prevent degradation. Eye drops, like any other medication, can be sensitive to environmental factors such as temperature, light, and humidity. Here are some guidelines to ensure that your eye drops remain safe and effective for use:
1. Storage Temperature: Most eye drops should be stored at room temperature, typically between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). However, some formulations may require refrigeration. Always check the label for specific storage instructions. If your room gets excessively hot, especially when the air conditioning is off, it may not be ideal for storing your eye drops.

2. Avoiding Heat and Humidity: As you experienced, closing the door in a hot room can create a stifling environment. If the temperature rises significantly, it could potentially affect the stability of the eye drops. If you notice any changes in the consistency, color, or clarity of the solution, it’s best to err on the side of caution and discontinue use.

3. Light Exposure: Many eye drops come in opaque or dark-colored bottles to protect them from light. If your eye drops are exposed to direct sunlight or bright indoor lighting for extended periods, this could lead to degradation. Always store them in a cool, dark place, away from direct light.

4. Check Expiration Dates: Always check the expiration date on the packaging. Using expired medications can lead to ineffective treatment and potential irritation. If your eye drops are past their expiration date, dispose of them properly.

5. Signs of Degradation: If you notice any changes in the eye drops, such as cloudiness, discoloration, or the presence of particles, do not use them. Additionally, if you experience increased irritation, discomfort, or any unusual symptoms after using the drops, stop using them and consult your healthcare provider.

6. Proper Handling: Always wash your hands before handling eye drops to prevent contamination. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye, as this can introduce bacteria into the bottle.

7. Consult Your Pharmacist or Doctor: If you have any doubts about the integrity of your eye drops, it’s best to consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on whether the drops are still safe to use or if you should obtain a new bottle.

In your specific case, if you have noticed a slight irritation after using the eye drops following a period of heat exposure, it would be prudent to stop using them until you can confirm their safety. If you are unsure, consider contacting your healthcare provider for advice. They may recommend a new prescription or suggest alternative treatments for your condition.

In summary, proper storage of eye drops is essential to ensure their effectiveness and safety. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, store them in a suitable environment, and be vigilant about any changes in the product or your symptoms. If in doubt, consult a healthcare professional for guidance.
