Unusual odor and discharge from the genital area?

Hello doctor, my menstrual period ended on August 11.
Two weeks later, I suddenly noticed brown discharge.
I initially thought it was ovulation bleeding, so I just used a panty liner.
However, after a sexual encounter (with a condom), I experienced bleeding.
Since then, I have been using sanitary pads, and the unusual odor has become stronger.
The strange thing is that I do not have any itching in the genital area.
Now, the discharge has turned orange-red.
Upon reflection, I realize that I have had unprotected intercourse with my boyfriend, and he has had five previous partners, all of whom he had unprotected sex with.
Now we are both each other's fixed sexual partners.
I would like to know if there is a possibility that this could be a sexually transmitted infection (STI)?

Yuzuki, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/09/26

More Info

It sounds like you're experiencing some concerning symptoms, and it's understandable to be worried about the possibility of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) given your recent experiences. The presence of unusual vaginal discharge, especially when accompanied by a change in color and odor, can indeed be indicative of various conditions, including STIs, but it can also be related to other non-infectious issues.

First, let's break down your symptoms. You mentioned experiencing brown discharge two weeks after your menstrual period, which you initially thought might be ovulation spotting. However, the subsequent occurrence of bleeding during intercourse and the change in discharge color to orange-red, along with a strong odor, are significant changes that warrant further investigation.

While STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis can cause abnormal discharge and odor, there are also other potential causes to consider. For instance, bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition that can lead to a fishy odor and changes in discharge, often without accompanying itching. This condition is not an STI but is related to an imbalance of normal bacteria in the vagina. Another possibility is a yeast infection, which typically presents with itching and thick, white discharge, but can sometimes present differently.

Given that you have had unprotected sex with your boyfriend, it is indeed possible that an STI could be a factor, especially considering his sexual history. Some STIs can be asymptomatic, meaning that one partner may not show any signs while the other does. Therefore, both partners should be tested to ensure that any potential infections are identified and treated.

It is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough examination. They may perform a pelvic exam and take samples of your discharge to test for STIs, BV, or other infections. Additionally, they may ask about your sexual history, any other symptoms you may be experiencing, and your menstrual cycle to get a clearer picture of your health.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
1. Avoid Sexual Activity: Until you have been evaluated and treated, it's advisable to refrain from sexual intercourse to prevent potential transmission of any infections.

2. Maintain Hygiene: Keep the genital area clean and dry. Avoid using scented products or douches, as these can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and lead to further irritation.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the color, consistency, and odor of your discharge, as well as any new symptoms that may arise.

4. Communicate with Your Partner: It's important to discuss your symptoms with your boyfriend, as he may also need to be tested and treated if an infection is confirmed.

5. Seek Prompt Medical Attention: If you experience severe pain, fever, or any other concerning symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

In conclusion, while your symptoms could be indicative of an STI, they could also be related to other conditions. A healthcare professional will be able to provide a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Don't hesitate to reach out for help; your health is important, and addressing these symptoms early can lead to better outcomes.
