Inquiry about hair growth lotion?
Hello Doctor, my family mentioned that I have less hair at the crown of my head, so I went to see a doctor.
The doctor said I don't need medication and prescribed me Minoxidil to apply.
However, I want to ask, since no one at school really thinks my hair looks strange, will using Minoxidil cause my hair to fall out more noticeably? I read online that hair may initially fall out, and the doctor mentioned he thinks I have androgenetic alopecia, but my family doesn't have a history of it.
The doctor then suggested using Minoxidil and reassessing the situation in six months, mentioning it could be due to late nights causing my hair to enter the telogen phase.
I want to ask you, if I don't use it, will my hair grow back on its own? I'm really worried that if I start using it, my hair will suddenly fall out and become very noticeable at school.
Thank you, Doctor.

I haven't observed your hair loss situation, so I'm not sure if it will continue to worsen without treatment.

When it comes to the treatment of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), Minoxidil is a commonly used topical solution that has shown effectiveness in many cases. However, your concerns about potential hair loss worsening after starting Minoxidil are valid and shared by many individuals considering this treatment.
Firstly, it is important to understand how Minoxidil works. Minoxidil is a vasodilator, meaning it helps to widen blood vessels and improve blood flow to the hair follicles. This increased circulation can stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss in some individuals. Clinical studies have shown that approximately 63% of users experience some improvement, with a smaller percentage seeing significant changes in hair density and appearance.
However, a common phenomenon associated with starting Minoxidil is the "shedding phase." This initial phase can occur within the first few weeks to months of treatment, where users may notice an increase in hair loss. This can be alarming, especially if you are already concerned about thinning hair. The shedding is often temporary and is thought to be a sign that the hair follicles are transitioning from a resting phase to a growth phase. While it may seem counterintuitive, this shedding is usually followed by new hair growth as the follicles respond to the treatment.
Regarding your specific situation, if you choose not to use Minoxidil, it is possible that your hair may not return to its previous fullness on its own, especially if you are indeed experiencing male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness is a progressive condition, and without treatment, it is likely that hair loss will continue over time. The rate and extent of hair loss can vary significantly from person to person, influenced by genetic factors and hormonal levels.
If you are concerned about the visibility of hair loss while using Minoxidil, it may help to know that many users report that the shedding phase is temporary and that they eventually see improvements. It is also worth noting that Minoxidil does not affect testosterone levels, so it will not exacerbate any hormonal issues that may contribute to hair loss.
In terms of alternative treatments, there are other options available, such as oral medications like Finasteride, which can help reduce hair loss by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss. However, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment regimen.
Ultimately, the decision to use Minoxidil should be based on a thorough discussion with your healthcare provider, considering your specific circumstances, concerns, and the potential benefits and risks of treatment. If you are apprehensive about starting Minoxidil, you might consider monitoring your hair loss for a while longer or exploring other treatment options that align with your comfort level. Remember, hair loss is a common issue, and there are various paths to manage it effectively.
