I feel unwell all over my body?
Hello, doctor.
I have undergone many tests, including blood tests, abdominal ultrasound, electrocardiogram (ECG), exercise ECG, echocardiogram, gastroscopy, and thyroid function tests, all of which returned normal results.
However, I still experience discomfort, including sensitivity in my intestines (sometimes diarrhea and sometimes constipation).
Many doctors at various clinics have diagnosed me with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
In addition to these symptoms, I also experience abdominal pain (which is tender when pressing on the muscles and has persisted for a long time).
Sometimes, when I wake up in the morning, I feel very weak, and at times throughout the day, I feel completely drained of energy, almost as if I might faint.
Many doctors have told me that I am overthinking and that this is due to autonomic nervous system dysfunction, but these symptoms have been ongoing for a long time (and there are actually more symptoms).
I am unsure how to resolve this, and I tend to overthink, often worrying about serious conditions like cancer whenever I feel unwell.

Hello, regarding your concerns, if all system checks show no significant abnormalities, it is indeed possible that psychological factors may be the cause of your physical discomfort.
It is recommended to maintain a regular routine, have a balanced diet, and engage in regular exercise.
Please consult further with your family physician, and if necessary, you may seek assistance from a mental health professional.
Online consultations do not equate to in-person medical visits and cannot provide diagnoses or treatment recommendations.

More Info
It sounds like you are experiencing a complex array of symptoms that have persisted despite numerous medical evaluations and tests showing normal results. This can be incredibly frustrating and distressing, especially when you are left without clear answers. Let's break down your situation and explore some potential avenues for understanding and addressing your chronic discomfort.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Chronic Discomfort and Functional Disorders: Your symptoms, including gastrointestinal issues (like alternating diarrhea and constipation), abdominal pain, and feelings of weakness, may suggest a functional gastrointestinal disorder, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is characterized by a combination of abdominal pain and altered bowel habits without any identifiable organic cause. It is often exacerbated by stress and anxiety, which can create a vicious cycle of discomfort and worry.
2. Somatic Symptom Disorder: Given that your tests have returned normal results, it's possible that you might be experiencing a somatic symptom disorder. This condition involves the presence of physical symptoms that cause significant distress or impairment but do not have a clear medical explanation. Individuals with this disorder often experience heightened awareness of bodily sensations, leading to increased anxiety about their health.
3. Autonomic Nervous System Dysregulation: You mentioned that some doctors suggested autonomic nervous system dysregulation. This can manifest as symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and gastrointestinal disturbances. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary bodily functions, and when it is out of balance, it can lead to a variety of physical symptoms.
4. Psychological Factors: Anxiety and stress can significantly impact physical health. If you find yourself frequently worrying about serious illnesses, this anxiety can manifest physically, leading to symptoms like those you describe. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can be particularly effective in addressing these thought patterns and helping you manage anxiety.
Steps to Take
1. Consult a Specialist: If you haven't already, consider consulting a gastroenterologist who specializes in functional gastrointestinal disorders. They can provide insights and management strategies specifically tailored to IBS or similar conditions.
2. Mental Health Support: Engaging with a mental health professional can be beneficial. They can help you explore the psychological aspects of your symptoms, including anxiety management techniques and cognitive restructuring to address health-related fears.
3. Lifestyle Modifications: Implementing lifestyle changes can also help alleviate some symptoms. This includes:
- Dietary Adjustments: Keeping a food diary to identify potential triggers for your gastrointestinal symptoms can be helpful. A dietitian can assist in creating a balanced diet that minimizes discomfort.
- Stress Management Techniques: Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and regular physical activity can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
- Sleep Hygiene: Ensuring you have good sleep habits can help combat feelings of weakness and fatigue.
4. Regular Follow-ups: Since your symptoms have persisted, regular follow-ups with your healthcare providers can help monitor your condition and adjust treatment plans as necessary.
Conclusion
Chronic discomfort without a clear medical diagnosis can be challenging to navigate. It is essential to approach your symptoms holistically, considering both physical and psychological factors. By seeking specialized care, engaging in mental health support, and making lifestyle adjustments, you can work towards finding relief and improving your quality of life. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and there are resources available to help you manage your symptoms effectively.
