Engaging in sexual intercourse on the day of ovulation?

Hello Doctor, I had sexual intercourse with my girlfriend on her ovulation day (calculated by a menstrual app).
We used a condom and I pulled out before ejaculation.
However, I ejaculated at the moment of complete withdrawal, and the condom may have shifted during the withdrawal process, causing it not to cover completely (I am very certain that the shift occurred only during withdrawal), resulting in a small amount of semen leaking out.
At that point, I had already withdrawn.
Therefore, I would like to ask the doctor:
Q1: If semen leaked out of the condom while the penis was already away from the vulva, is there still a chance of pregnancy?
Q2: If there is a small amount of semen remaining on the surface of the vulva, can rinsing it off immediately prevent pregnancy?
Thank you for your assistance.
🙏

Hello, the failure rate of contraception using condoms is still over 5%, which is less reliable compared to other methods.
It is recommended to check for pregnancy if your period is more than a week late.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

When it comes to the question of whether pregnancy can occur from semen leakage on ovulation day, there are several factors to consider. Let's break down your questions and provide a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

Q1: Can you get pregnant if semen leaks out while the penis is already withdrawn?
In general, the likelihood of pregnancy occurring from semen leakage after withdrawal is relatively low, especially if the penis has already been removed from the vaginal canal. However, it is important to note that sperm can be present in pre-ejaculatory fluid (pre-cum), which is released before ejaculation. If there was any residual sperm in the urethra at the time of withdrawal, it could potentially be released along with the pre-ejaculatory fluid.
Since you mentioned that the semen leakage occurred while the penis was already withdrawn, the chances of sperm reaching the egg are significantly reduced. The egg is typically viable for fertilization for about 12 to 24 hours after ovulation, and sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days under optimal conditions. Therefore, if the semen leakage occurred after withdrawal and there was no direct contact with the vaginal canal, the risk of pregnancy is minimal.

Q2: If there is residual semen on the vulva, can washing it off immediately prevent pregnancy?
Washing the vulva immediately after potential exposure to sperm can help reduce the risk of pregnancy, but it is not a guaranteed method of prevention. The effectiveness of washing depends on several factors, including the timing of the wash and the amount of sperm present. If sperm has already entered the vaginal canal, washing may not be sufficient to prevent pregnancy.

It is important to understand that while washing can remove some sperm from the external genitalia, it does not eliminate the risk entirely if sperm has already been deposited inside the vagina. Additionally, the act of washing may not be able to remove all sperm, especially if they have already migrated into the vaginal canal.

Additional Considerations:
1. Timing of Ovulation: Since you mentioned that the encounter occurred on the day of ovulation, this is a critical factor. The chances of conception are highest during ovulation, so any exposure to sperm during this time carries a higher risk of pregnancy.

2. Contraceptive Methods: While withdrawal (pulling out) can reduce the risk of pregnancy, it is not a foolproof method. If you are actively trying to avoid pregnancy, consider using additional contraceptive methods, such as condoms or hormonal birth control, which can provide more reliable protection.

3. Emergency Contraception: If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, you may want to consider emergency contraception (EC) options, which can be effective if taken within a certain timeframe after unprotected intercourse. EC works best when taken as soon as possible after the event.

4. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If you have further concerns about potential pregnancy or contraceptive methods, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific circumstances and health history.

In conclusion, while the risk of pregnancy from semen leakage after withdrawal is low, it is not entirely eliminated, especially on ovulation day. Immediate washing may help reduce the risk, but it is not a guaranteed method of prevention. For those who wish to avoid pregnancy, using reliable contraceptive methods and consulting with a healthcare provider is recommended.

Dear netizens: Hello! Having intercourse the day before ovulation greatly increases the chances of pregnancy; withdrawal method is not an ideal contraceptive method, as it has a high failure rate (unintended pregnancy); semen naturally exits the vagina regardless of ovulation.

Of course, if it coincides with the ovulation period, there is still a significant chance of conception. Even during ovulation, the withdrawal method (coitus interruptus) can still result in pregnancy.
