Does collagen benefit the eyes?

Dear Dr.
Gao,
I am a highly myopic engineer with over -10.00 diopters of myopia and -3.50 diopters of astigmatism in both eyes.
I have previously undergone laser repair for retinal tears in both eyes, which has made me very concerned about vitreous degeneration potentially causing new retinal tears.
I would like to ask if there are any foods or substances that can help reduce vitreous degeneration.
Recently, I saw many benefits of collagen on television, including a claim that "the vitreous is composed of hyaluronic acid and collagen, and supplementing collagen can reduce vitreous degeneration and decrease retinal issues." After researching online, I found many similar reports with the same statements, which seem plausible.
Is this perspective correct? From an ophthalmologist's standpoint, would you recommend additional collagen supplementation to improve vitreous health? Thank you!

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello: The vitreous body is a structure of the eye, primarily composed of a transparent gel-like substance.
Collagen is a type of protein found in the body and is also part of the eye's tissues, but the vitreous is mainly made up of this gel-like substance and water.
Although there are some claims that collagen supplements can aid eye health, current scientific evidence is insufficient to determine the extent of collagen's positive impact on vitreous degeneration.
To my knowledge, there is currently nothing that can improve vitreous degeneration.

The question of whether collagen supplements can help prevent vitreous degeneration is an interesting one, especially for individuals with a history of high myopia and retinal issues. The vitreous body, a gel-like substance filling the eye, is composed primarily of water, collagen, and hyaluronic acid. As we age, the vitreous can undergo changes, leading to degeneration, which may increase the risk of retinal detachment, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions like high myopia.

Collagen is a crucial structural protein in the body, providing strength and support to various tissues, including skin, cartilage, and connective tissues. The idea that collagen supplements could benefit vitreous health stems from the notion that replenishing collagen might help maintain the structural integrity of the vitreous body. However, the scientific evidence supporting this claim is limited.

Currently, there is no robust clinical research specifically demonstrating that collagen supplementation can prevent vitreous degeneration or reduce the risk of retinal problems. While some studies suggest that collagen may support overall eye health by contributing to the structural components of the eye, the direct impact of collagen supplements on vitreous degeneration remains largely unproven.

In addition to collagen, other nutrients are known to support eye health. Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, lutein, and zeaxanthin play a role in protecting the eyes from oxidative stress, which can contribute to various eye conditions. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, are also beneficial for eye health and may help reduce inflammation.

For individuals concerned about vitreous degeneration, a holistic approach to eye health is advisable. This includes:
1. Balanced Diet: Incorporate foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins essential for eye health. Leafy greens, colorful fruits, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish are excellent choices.

2. Regular Eye Check-ups: Given your history of retinal issues, regular visits to an eye care professional are crucial. They can monitor your eye health and provide personalized recommendations.

3. Protective Measures: Protect your eyes from UV light by wearing sunglasses outdoors. Additionally, managing screen time and ensuring proper lighting can help reduce eye strain.

4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is essential for maintaining the health of the vitreous body, as it is primarily composed of water.

5. Lifestyle Choices: Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption, as these can negatively impact eye health.

In conclusion, while the idea of using collagen supplements to prevent vitreous degeneration is appealing, it is essential to approach this topic with caution. The current scientific evidence does not strongly support the efficacy of collagen supplements for this specific purpose. Instead, focusing on a well-rounded diet, regular eye care, and healthy lifestyle choices will likely yield better results in maintaining overall eye health and potentially mitigating the risks associated with vitreous degeneration. If you are considering collagen supplements or any other dietary changes, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, particularly an ophthalmologist, who can provide tailored advice based on your medical history and current eye health status.
