Abnormal bleeding after menstruation?
After my period ended, I experienced bleeding again five days later.
The blood was bright red but not heavy.
I went to see a doctor the next day, and during the pelvic examination, the doctor found no abnormalities and suggested it might be a hormonal issue.
I was prescribed hemostatic medication for five days, and I am currently on the third morning of taking it.
Since starting the medication, the bleeding has increased daily and is bright red, similar to the second day of my menstrual flow.
I called the original clinic, and the doctor advised me to continue taking the medication, as the effects may not have fully manifested yet.
They suggested that I return for a follow-up after finishing the medication if the bleeding continues, and they might consider changing my prescription.
Should I continue taking the medication and monitor my symptoms before returning for a follow-up, or would it be advisable to seek immediate care at a larger hospital?

Post-menstrual abnormal bleeding can be concerning, especially when it deviates from your normal menstrual cycle. In your case, experiencing bright red bleeding five days after your period, which has increased in volume after starting medication, warrants careful consideration.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that abnormal bleeding can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, polyps, or even more serious conditions like endometrial hyperplasia or malignancies. The fact that your doctor performed an internal examination and found no immediate abnormalities is reassuring, but it does not completely rule out underlying issues.
The medication prescribed to you, likely a form of hormonal therapy or a hemostatic agent, is intended to help regulate your bleeding. However, if you notice that the bleeding is increasing rather than decreasing after a few days of treatment, it may indicate that the medication is not effective for your specific situation.
In general, if you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention:
1. Heavy Bleeding: Soaking through one or more pads or tampons every hour for several consecutive hours.
2. Severe Pain: Intense abdominal or pelvic pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications.
3. Dizziness or Fainting: Signs of significant blood loss, such as feeling faint, lightheaded, or weak.
4. Persistent Symptoms: If the abnormal bleeding continues beyond a few days or worsens despite medication.
Given that your bleeding has increased in volume and is bright red, it would be prudent to err on the side of caution. While your doctor has advised you to continue the medication and observe the situation, if you feel uncomfortable or if your symptoms worsen, it is advisable to seek a second opinion or visit a larger medical facility where more comprehensive diagnostic tools (like ultrasound or blood tests) can be utilized.
In addition to seeking immediate care if symptoms worsen, consider the following steps:
- Keep a Record: Document your bleeding patterns, including the amount, color, and any associated symptoms (like pain or fatigue). This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider.
- Follow-Up: If you complete the medication and the bleeding persists, make sure to follow up with your healthcare provider as soon as possible. They may want to perform additional tests or consider alternative treatments.
- Lifestyle Considerations: Maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated. Stress management techniques such as yoga or meditation can also be beneficial, as stress can sometimes exacerbate hormonal imbalances.
In summary, while it is reasonable to follow your doctor's advice and observe the situation after completing the medication, do not hesitate to seek further medical attention if your symptoms worsen or if you have any concerns. Your health and well-being should always come first, and it’s better to be proactive in addressing any potential issues.
