Arrhythmia
Hello Doctor, since last year, I have been experiencing a feeling of tightness in my chest, as if I can't catch my breath, but this only occurs before sleep, about a few days each month.
Last month, I visited a family medicine clinic where I underwent an electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, and blood tests.
There were no significant abnormalities found in my thyroid, lungs, or heart, but the doctor mentioned that I have an arrhythmia, which appears to be benign, and advised me not to worry too much.
They prescribed me medication for palpitations and said I could take one if I feel uncomfortable.
I have not experienced arrhythmia before.
Do I need to see a cardiologist to check my heart? If not, are there any specific precautions I should take or ways to improve my condition?

I recommend that you: 1.
Discuss the above situation further with your attending physician.
2.
Consider seeking a consultation at another cardiology medical facility.
Wishing you good health.
Thank you!

When it comes to atrial arrhythmias and the decision to seek further cardiac evaluation, it is essential to consider several factors, including the nature of your symptoms, the results of previous tests, and your overall health. Based on your description, you have experienced episodes of chest tightness and shortness of breath, particularly at night, which can be concerning. However, your recent evaluations, including an electrocardiogram (ECG), chest X-ray, and blood tests, did not reveal any significant abnormalities, and your physician indicated that the arrhythmia appears to be benign.
Atrial arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, can sometimes be asymptomatic or present with mild symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, or fatigue. In your case, the fact that your symptoms occur infrequently and are not associated with more severe manifestations (like syncope or severe chest pain) is reassuring. The physician's assessment that your arrhythmia is benign suggests that it is not currently causing significant risk to your heart function or overall health.
However, there are several considerations to keep in mind:
1. Symptom Monitoring: Continue to monitor your symptoms. If you notice an increase in frequency, duration, or severity of your episodes, or if you develop new symptoms such as fainting, severe shortness of breath, or chest pain, it would be prudent to seek further evaluation from a cardiologist.
2. Medication Adherence: Since you have been prescribed medication for your palpitations, ensure that you take it as directed. This can help manage your symptoms and reduce the likelihood of more severe episodes.
3. Lifestyle Modifications: Consider implementing lifestyle changes that can help improve your heart health and potentially reduce the frequency of your arrhythmias. This includes:
- Regular Exercise: Engage in moderate physical activity, as tolerated. Exercise can improve cardiovascular health, but avoid excessive intensity, especially if you experience symptoms during exertion.
- Diet: Adopt a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake may also help if these are triggers for your symptoms.
- Stress Management: Practice stress-reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises, as stress can exacerbate arrhythmias.
4. Regular Follow-Up: Even if your current symptoms are manageable, regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is essential. They can monitor your condition and make adjustments to your treatment plan as necessary.
5. When to Seek Further Evaluation: If your symptoms change or worsen, or if you develop new symptoms, it is crucial to consult a cardiologist. They may recommend additional testing, such as a Holter monitor to assess your heart rhythm over a longer period or an echocardiogram to evaluate heart structure and function.
In summary, while your current situation may not necessitate immediate further evaluation by a cardiologist, staying vigilant about your symptoms and maintaining regular communication with your healthcare provider is essential. Adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle and adhering to your prescribed medications can significantly contribute to your overall well-being and potentially mitigate the impact of atrial arrhythmias.
