Vaginal inflammation in early pregnancy?

I am currently 9 weeks pregnant and went to the obstetrics and gynecology department for vaginal inflammation.
The doctor prescribed a single oral dose of Fluconazole (150 mg/tab).
I later learned that it is not recommended for pregnant women.
Will this have a significant impact? Could it affect the development of the fetus?

Fluconazole is an antifungal medication commonly used to treat various fungal infections, including vaginal yeast infections. However, its use during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, has raised concerns regarding potential risks to fetal development.
In your case, having taken a single dose of Fluconazole (150 mg) at nine weeks of pregnancy, it is understandable to be concerned about its effects on your developing fetus. Research has shown that the use of Fluconazole, especially in high doses or prolonged use during the first trimester, may be associated with an increased risk of certain congenital malformations. The FDA classifies Fluconazole as a Category D drug for pregnancy, which means there is evidence of risk to the fetus, but the potential benefits may warrant its use in certain situations.

The specific risks associated with Fluconazole include potential teratogenic effects, particularly when used in high doses (greater than 400 mg per day). Some studies have indicated a possible association with birth defects, such as craniofacial anomalies and other structural defects. However, the risk appears to be significantly lower when Fluconazole is used in a single low dose, as in your case.
It is essential to consider that the overall risk of major birth defects in the general population is about 3-5%. The increase in risk associated with Fluconazole, particularly at the dose you have taken, is still being studied, and the findings are not entirely conclusive. Some studies suggest that the risk may not be substantial with a single low dose, while others indicate caution is warranted.

If you have concerns about the potential impact of Fluconazole on your pregnancy, it is crucial to discuss these with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and the specifics of your situation. Regular prenatal care is vital, and your doctor may recommend additional monitoring or ultrasounds to assess fetal development as your pregnancy progresses.

In summary, while there are potential risks associated with Fluconazole use during early pregnancy, the implications of a single low dose are not fully understood. The best course of action is to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, who can guide you through this situation and help ensure the best possible outcomes for you and your baby. Regular check-ups and screenings will be essential to monitor your pregnancy's progress and address any concerns that may arise.
