Side effects of medications?
I have been taking finasteride for almost three months due to my hair loss issue.
My libido has not been affected, and the frequency of masturbation is about the same as before.
The only noticeable change is a significant decrease in the frequency of morning erections.
I would like to know if this is a side effect of the medication and if improving my lifestyle could help restore my morning erections to what they were before.

Dr. Sun Hongshun reply Urology
Hello: A decrease in the frequency of morning erections may be related to medication use, but it does not necessarily indicate a health issue.
Improving lifestyle habits such as going to bed early, waking up early, or exercising can certainly help you regain a more energetic state!

More Info
When it comes to understanding the side effects of medications, particularly those related to sexual health, it is essential to consider various factors, including the specific medication, individual health conditions, and lifestyle choices. In your case, you mentioned using a medication for hair loss, likely finasteride (often marketed as Propecia), which is known to have potential side effects related to sexual function.
Impact of Finasteride on Sexual Health
Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). While this mechanism can be effective for treating hair loss, it can also lead to sexual side effects in some individuals. Commonly reported side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and reduced ejaculate volume. The reduction in morning erections (often referred to as "morning wood") that you are experiencing could indeed be related to the use of finasteride. However, it is important to note that not everyone experiences these side effects, and they can vary in intensity.
Lifestyle Changes and Their Potential Impact
Improving your lifestyle can have a positive effect on sexual health. Factors such as diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep quality play significant roles in overall well-being, including sexual function. Here are some suggestions:
1. Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can improve blood flow and hormone levels, which are crucial for sexual health. Foods high in antioxidants, such as berries and nuts, can also support overall health.
2. Exercise: Regular physical activity can enhance circulation, reduce stress, and improve mood, all of which can contribute to better sexual function. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week.
3. Stress Management: Chronic stress can negatively impact libido and sexual performance. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and yoga can help reduce stress levels.
4. Sleep: Quality sleep is essential for hormonal balance and overall health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to support your body’s natural functions.
5. Avoiding Alcohol and Smoking: Both can negatively affect sexual performance and overall health. Reducing or eliminating these substances can lead to improvements.
Consultation with Healthcare Providers
If you are concerned about the side effects of finasteride or any other medication, it is crucial to discuss these issues with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. In some cases, they may suggest alternative treatments for hair loss that have a lower risk of sexual side effects.
Conclusion
In summary, while finasteride can lead to changes in sexual function, including reduced morning erections, lifestyle modifications can potentially improve your overall sexual health. It is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider regarding any side effects you experience and to explore all available options for managing both your hair loss and sexual health concerns. Remember, individual responses to medications can vary widely, and what works for one person may not work for another.
