Regarding penile torsion?
Hello doctor, I have a question.
When my penis is erect, it appears straight, but when viewed from above, I notice that the urethral opening is slightly tilted at a 30-degree angle.
There is no pain associated with this condition.
Does this require surgical correction? Could it potentially worsen? Does this fall under the category of penile torsion? Thank you!

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology
In principle, as long as there is no impact on sexual activity and urination, it should not be a concern.
If there are still doubts, it is advisable to visit a urology clinic for an examination.

Understanding penile curvature is an important aspect of male sexual health, and it can often lead to concerns about potential complications or the need for treatment. Based on your description, it seems that you have noticed a slight curvature of about 30 degrees in the urethral opening when viewed from above, but you are not experiencing any pain. This situation raises a few points worth discussing.
First, it is essential to differentiate between normal anatomical variations and conditions that may require medical intervention. A certain degree of curvature in the penis is common and can be considered normal, especially if it does not cause pain, discomfort, or difficulty during sexual intercourse. Many men have slight curves that do not necessitate treatment. However, if the curvature is accompanied by pain, significant changes in sexual function, or if it progressively worsens, it may warrant further evaluation.
In your case, since you mentioned that the curvature does not cause pain and is not affecting your sexual function, it may not require surgical intervention. Surgery is typically reserved for cases where the curvature is severe enough to cause pain, difficulty with penetration, or psychological distress. The decision to undergo surgery should be made in consultation with a urologist, who can assess the degree of curvature and its impact on your quality of life.
Regarding the concern about whether the condition might worsen, it is difficult to predict the progression of penile curvature without a thorough examination. Some men may experience changes over time, while others may not. If you notice any changes in curvature, pain, or other symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
In terms of treatment options, if the curvature is determined to be significant and problematic, there are several approaches available. These may include:
1. Observation: If the curvature is mild and not causing issues, regular monitoring may be all that is needed.
2. Medications: In some cases, medications may be prescribed to help manage any underlying conditions contributing to the curvature.
3. Penile traction therapy: This non-surgical option involves using a device to gradually stretch the penis, which may help reduce curvature over time.
4. Surgery: If the curvature is severe, surgical options such as plication or grafting techniques may be considered. These procedures aim to straighten the penis and improve function.
5. Counseling: If the curvature is causing psychological distress, speaking with a mental health professional may be beneficial.
In conclusion, based on your description, it appears that your condition may not require immediate surgical intervention, especially since it is not causing pain or functional issues. However, it is crucial to maintain open communication with a healthcare provider who specializes in urology. They can provide personalized advice and help you determine the best course of action based on your specific situation. Regular check-ups and monitoring can also help ensure that any changes in your condition are addressed promptly.
