Chest pain and tightness?

On the second day of my menstrual period, I started experiencing chest tightness, but it lasted for about 15 to 20 minutes and then went away.
Now that my period has ended, I sometimes feel an itchy throat which leads to coughing.
However, when I cough, I experience pain in the center of my chest.
After coughing, I still feel a dull pain in that area.
I've been experiencing occasional chest tightness and mild pain, but it's not severe and is always located in the center.
Should I see a doctor? Thank you.

Understanding chest discomfort can be a complex issue, as it can stem from a variety of causes, ranging from benign to serious. Your symptoms, particularly the chest discomfort that began during your menstrual period and the subsequent throat irritation and cough, warrant careful consideration.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can lead to various physical symptoms, including breast tenderness and chest discomfort. This is often due to the effects of estrogen and progesterone on breast tissue and surrounding areas. However, the fact that you are experiencing ongoing symptoms, such as throat irritation and cough, alongside chest discomfort, suggests that it may be prudent to seek medical attention.

Chest pain or discomfort can arise from several sources, including:
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: Sometimes, chest discomfort can be due to muscle strain or inflammation in the chest wall. This is often exacerbated by certain movements or positions and can be associated with coughing.

2. Respiratory Conditions: Given your mention of a cough and throat irritation, it’s possible that you may be experiencing a respiratory issue, such as bronchitis or even a mild respiratory infection. These conditions can lead to inflammation in the airways, causing discomfort in the chest area.

3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can cause a sensation of chest discomfort, often mistaken for heart-related issues. If you notice that certain foods or lying down exacerbate your symptoms, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Cardiac Concerns: While your symptoms may not seem severe, it’s crucial to rule out any cardiac issues, especially if you experience any additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or radiating pain to the arms or jaw.

Given that your symptoms have persisted beyond your menstrual period and are accompanied by a cough, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They can conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and potentially diagnostic tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), chest X-ray, or pulmonary function tests, depending on their assessment.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
- Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep a record of when your symptoms occur, their duration, and any associated factors (like physical activity, food intake, or stress levels). This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

- Stay Hydrated: If your throat is irritated, ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and soothe any irritation.

- Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, or allergens that may exacerbate your cough or throat discomfort.

- Rest: Ensure you are getting adequate rest, as fatigue can sometimes exacerbate feelings of discomfort.

In conclusion, while some chest discomfort can be related to benign causes, it is always better to err on the side of caution. Seeking medical attention will provide you with peace of mind and ensure that any potential underlying issues are addressed promptly. Your health is paramount, and a healthcare professional can guide you through the next steps based on a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms.
