Side Effects of Qian You Jie: A Patient's Experience - Psychiatry

Side effects of Qianyoujie (also known as "Qianyoujie" or "Qian You Jie")?

Hello doctor, I have been taking Qianyoujie for six years, two pills a day, always in the morning.
Recently, I couldn't get an appointment for a follow-up visit, so I stopped taking the medication for three days.
My body started to feel a sudden electric shock-like sensation, which is very uncomfortable.
Could this be a side effect of Qianyoujie? Is it really possible to experience such symptoms?

Dr. Li Guanying reply Psychiatry

Dear Sir/Madam,
From your letter, it is clear that you are experiencing discomfort and distress due to concerns about the side effects of your medication.

1.
Anxiety disorders are common in modern society, characterized by uncertainty about the future.
This is a chronic condition that requires long-term treatment for recovery.

2.
Anxiety disorders have phases including acute episodes, remission, recovery, and relapse.
More than half of patients may experience a recurrence of symptoms even after they have improved.
Due to individual differences in physiology, it may take time to determine the most suitable medication for you, so please be patient and cooperate with your physician.
3.
Regarding medication treatment, each primary medication typically requires 4 to 6 weeks to assess its effectiveness.
If you experience any adverse symptoms, please note the duration and frequency of these occurrences.
4.
In addition to medication and psychotherapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive treatment that does not require anesthesia, has a high safety profile, and does not necessitate hospitalization.
It can help improve anxiety and depressive symptoms.
Some symptoms may stem from the original condition, but they could also be side effects of the medication.
Undergoing rTMS may provide an opportunity to completely avoid antidepressant medications, thereby alleviating concerns about medication side effects.
Our clinic is open for consultations Monday through Friday, both in the morning and afternoon.
We recommend that you consider visiting the clinic for a personal evaluation of your symptoms by a physician, so that we can collaboratively determine the best course of action for you.
Wishing you good mental and physical health.

When it comes to the experience of discontinuing medication like Qian You Jie (Cymbalta or Duloxetine), it is essential to understand the potential side effects and withdrawal symptoms associated with this medication. Qian You Jie is primarily used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, and it works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, which helps to improve mood and alleviate anxiety.

Your experience of feeling "electric shocks" or a tingling sensation after stopping the medication could be indicative of withdrawal symptoms. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as "discontinuation syndrome," which can occur when a patient abruptly stops taking certain antidepressants, particularly those that affect serotonin levels in the brain. Symptoms of discontinuation syndrome can include dizziness, nausea, headache, fatigue, irritability, and sensory disturbances such as the "electric shock" sensations you described.

It is important to note that not everyone will experience withdrawal symptoms, and the severity can vary significantly among individuals. Factors such as the duration of use, dosage, and individual physiology can all play a role in how a person reacts to stopping the medication. In your case, having taken Qian You Jie for six years at a consistent dosage may increase the likelihood of experiencing withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation.

If you are experiencing discomfort, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a gradual tapering of the medication rather than an abrupt stop, which can help mitigate withdrawal symptoms. A healthcare professional can provide guidance on how to safely discontinue the medication and may suggest alternative treatments or supportive therapies to manage your symptoms.

Additionally, it is crucial to consider the underlying condition for which you were prescribed Qian You Jie. If you have been managing anxiety or depression, stopping the medication suddenly may lead to a resurgence of these symptoms. Therefore, it is essential to have a comprehensive plan in place with your healthcare provider to address both the discontinuation of the medication and the management of your mental health.

In summary, your experience of feeling "electric shocks" after stopping Qian You Jie could be related to withdrawal symptoms. It is crucial to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare provider, who can help you navigate the process of discontinuation safely and effectively. Remember, mental health is a complex and individualized journey, and having the right support is key to managing your well-being.
