Am I sick?

Hello, doctor! During my last visit to the hospital for psychological therapy, I felt that it wasn't effective, and my condition seems to be getting worse.
Recently, I have this feeling that people are talking behind my back and trying to set me up.
I'm on the verge of a breakdown; I don't want to live like this anymore.
As each day passes, my stress is increasing (academic pressure), and my physical health is deteriorating.
I’m also unsure if I have any underlying health issues.
I can't take it anymore...
Who understands my feelings? Please help me, doctor.

Lizi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/01/29

Dear Lizzie: It seems that you are feeling quite down, and some uncomfortable experiences and feelings have been troubling you.
Your physical condition appears to be negatively affected by your mental state, and the discomfort in your body is further weighing down your mood, creating a vicious cycle.
You may feel that following your doctor's instructions and undergoing psychotherapy is ineffective and even worsening your situation.
I have previously shared my thoughts online regarding the process and experiences of psychotherapy, describing it as akin to peeling an onion—where one may cry while peeling, but the tears can also clear away some confusion, allowing us to see ourselves and the challenges we face more clearly.
Sometimes, at the beginning of therapy, there may be a strong connection with the therapist, leading to a comfortable but stagnant place, lacking the motivation for further self-exploration.
At other times, the inability to confront harsh and painful realities can lead to increased sadness and suffering.
I still hope that you can follow your doctor's guidance and accept the necessary medication and psychotherapy, as this may help you emerge from the dark valley and embrace the sunlight of life.
Wishing you peace and joy!

It sounds like you are going through an incredibly difficult time, and I want to acknowledge the pain and distress you are feeling. Your experiences of feeling overwhelmed, paranoid, and hopeless are serious and deserve attention. It’s important to understand that you are not alone in this struggle, and there are ways to seek help and find relief.

From your description, it seems you are experiencing symptoms that could be associated with anxiety and depression. The feelings of paranoia, such as believing others are speaking ill of you or trying to harm you, can be particularly distressing. These thoughts can lead to a cycle of increased anxiety and isolation, making it even harder to cope with daily life. Additionally, the pressure from academic responsibilities can exacerbate these feelings, leading to a sense of being trapped and overwhelmed.

It’s crucial to recognize that mental health issues are medical conditions, just like physical illnesses. They can affect anyone, regardless of age or background, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. You mentioned that your previous therapy sessions did not seem effective, which can happen for various reasons. Sometimes, it may take time to find the right therapist or treatment approach that resonates with you. It’s also possible that the therapist you saw was not the right fit for your needs, and that’s okay. It’s important to advocate for yourself in these situations.

If you are feeling increasingly hopeless or having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, I urge you to seek immediate help. This could be through a mental health crisis hotline, a trusted friend or family member, or going to the emergency room. Your safety is the top priority, and there are professionals who can help you navigate these feelings.

In terms of managing your stress and anxiety, consider incorporating some self-care strategies into your daily routine. This could include mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep-breathing exercises, which can help ground you in the present moment and reduce feelings of anxiety. Regular physical activity, even if it’s just a short walk, can also improve your mood and overall well-being. Additionally, maintaining a healthy sleep schedule and eating balanced meals can have a positive impact on your mental health.

It’s also beneficial to talk about your feelings with someone you trust. This could be a friend, family member, or a mental health professional. Sharing your experiences can help alleviate some of the burdens you are carrying and provide you with support. If you feel comfortable, consider reaching out to a school counselor or a mental health professional who specializes in anxiety and depression. They can work with you to develop coping strategies and explore treatment options, which may include therapy or medication.

Remember, it’s okay to ask for help, and you deserve to feel better. Your feelings are valid, and there is hope for recovery. It may take time, but with the right support and resources, you can find a way through this challenging period. Please take care of yourself and prioritize your mental health. You are not alone in this journey, and there are people who want to help you.
