Menstrual Delay and Pregnancy Testing Issues

Hello Doctor: My menstrual cycles over the past six months have been as follows: June: 11-16, July: 19-25, August: 23-28, September, October: 25-30.
This month, I had sexual intercourse on the 6th, 7th, and 13th, and my boyfriend used a condom throughout (I'm not sure if he pulled out before putting on the condom on the 13th).
Afterward, we checked for any issues with water.
The app predicted my period would start on November 27, but it has been delayed by four days.
I checked online, and a delay of plus or minus seven days is within the normal range.
Regardless of whether I count from the 6th, 7th, or 13th, it has been over two weeks.
Should I continue to wait or buy a pregnancy test to check? P.S.
I've been very busy and staying up late recently, so I'm not sure if this is just due to hormonal imbalance.
Thank you for your response, Doctor.

When it comes to missed periods and the possibility of pregnancy, it's essential to approach the situation with a clear understanding of your menstrual cycle, the timing of sexual activity, and the reliability of pregnancy tests. Based on your description, your menstrual cycle has been relatively regular, with your last period expected on November 27. Since you mentioned that your period is now four days late, it's understandable that you are feeling uncertain and anxious about the possibility of being pregnant.

First, let's address the timing of your sexual activity. You indicated that you had intercourse on the 6th, 7th, and 13th of the month, and that your boyfriend used a condom throughout. While condoms are a reliable form of contraception when used correctly, there is still a small chance of failure, especially if there was any mishandling during the process. The fact that you checked the condom afterward and found no issues is reassuring, but it does not completely eliminate the possibility of pregnancy.

Given that your period is late, it is advisable to take a pregnancy test. Home pregnancy tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. Most tests are accurate if taken after a missed period, so waiting a few more days could yield a more reliable result. However, since you are already four days late, it is reasonable to take a test now. If the test is negative but your period still does not arrive, consider retesting in a few days or consulting with a healthcare provider.

It's also important to consider other factors that could contribute to a missed period. Stress, changes in routine, and lifestyle factors such as lack of sleep or significant changes in diet can all impact your menstrual cycle. You mentioned that you have been busy and staying up late, which could potentially lead to hormonal imbalances that affect your cycle. If your test comes back negative and your period does not start, it may be worth exploring these lifestyle factors further.

In summary, I recommend taking a home pregnancy test as soon as possible to determine if you are pregnant. If the result is negative and your period still does not arrive within a week, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide further evaluation to rule out any underlying issues, such as hormonal imbalances or other health concerns. Remember, it's always better to seek medical advice if you have any doubts or concerns about your reproductive health.
