Drug interactions
I have been taking pre-exposure prophylaxis for over six months.
In mid-November, I started taking DHC Vitamin C and B.
I originally took the vitamins in the morning and the pre-exposure prophylaxis before bed.
Today, I accidentally took them at the same time.
After researching online, I found that taking pre-exposure prophylaxis and Vitamin C simultaneously may inhibit estrogen, increasing the risk of side effects.
I would like to know if this means it could affect the contraceptive effectiveness?

Vitamin C is a well-known antioxidant that plays a vital role in various bodily functions, including the maintenance of skin, blood vessels, bones, and cartilage, as well as wound healing. It is also essential for the immune system. However, when it comes to its interaction with birth control pills, the evidence is not entirely conclusive.
Birth control pills primarily work by delivering hormones (estrogen and progestin) to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining. The concern regarding Vitamin C and birth control pills arises from the potential for Vitamin C to affect estrogen metabolism. Some studies suggest that high doses of Vitamin C may influence estrogen levels, but the clinical significance of this interaction remains unclear.
The concern that Vitamin C could inhibit estrogen and thus reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills is primarily theoretical. Most research indicates that typical dietary doses of Vitamin C (around 500 mg to 1000 mg per day) do not significantly affect the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives. However, when taken in excessive amounts, there may be a potential for interaction, although this is not well-documented in clinical studies.
In your case, taking Vitamin C and birth control pills simultaneously is unlikely to pose a significant risk to the effectiveness of your contraceptive method, especially if you are consuming Vitamin C within recommended dietary limits. The key is moderation; excessive intake of Vitamin C (for example, doses exceeding 2000 mg per day) could theoretically lead to changes in hormone levels, but this is not a common occurrence for most individuals.
If you are concerned about the interaction or the potential effects on your birth control's efficacy, it would be prudent to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and the specific birth control method you are using. Additionally, if you experience any unusual side effects or changes in your menstrual cycle, it is essential to discuss these with your doctor.
In summary, while there is some theoretical concern regarding the interaction between Vitamin C and birth control pills, the evidence does not strongly support that typical doses of Vitamin C will significantly affect the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Maintaining a balanced diet and adhering to recommended dosages of supplements is advisable. Always consult with a healthcare professional for tailored advice and to address any specific concerns you may have regarding your health and medications.
