Head injury, numbness in the hands, and applying a hot compress to the head causes pain?

Hello Doctor, three days ago I bumped the top right side of my head.
When I hit it, my neck jerked, which caused pain in my shoulders, neck, and head.
I took painkillers for the first three days, but the headache persists.
Today, I haven't taken any pain medication, and the pain is quite severe; eating makes it worse.
Walking and writing increase the pain.
While writing, I also experience numbness in my hands.
When I apply a hot compress to my shoulders and neck in the evening, the area where I hit my head actually hurts more.
I would like to ask the doctor if this is normal.
Thank you.

Experiencing persistent pain and numbness after a head injury can be concerning, and it is essential to understand the potential implications of such symptoms. Based on your description, it seems you sustained a head injury three days ago, which has led to ongoing pain in your head, neck, and shoulders, along with numbness in your hands.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that head injuries can lead to a variety of symptoms, depending on the severity and location of the impact. The pain you are experiencing could be due to several factors, including muscle strain, tension headaches, or even more serious conditions such as a concussion or cervical spine injury. The fact that you felt your neck "shrink" at the time of impact suggests that there may have been a whiplash effect, which can cause muscle strain and inflammation in the neck and upper back, leading to referred pain in the head.

The persistent pain you are experiencing, especially when performing activities like eating, walking, or writing, could indicate that the muscles and nerves in your neck and shoulders are still affected by the trauma. Additionally, the numbness in your hands while writing could suggest that there is some nerve involvement, possibly due to compression or irritation of the cervical spine nerves. This is particularly concerning if the numbness persists or worsens, as it may indicate a more serious underlying issue that requires medical evaluation.

It is also worth noting that the application of heat, such as with a hot pack, can sometimes exacerbate inflammation in the acute phase following an injury, leading to increased pain. In the initial days after a head or neck injury, ice is often recommended to reduce swelling and numb the area, while heat may be more appropriate after the acute phase has passed.

Given that you have been taking pain medication without significant relief, and considering the duration and nature of your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional, particularly a neurologist or an orthopedic specialist, can perform a thorough examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an MRI or CT scan, to rule out any serious injuries like fractures or internal bleeding.

In summary, while some pain and discomfort following a head injury can be normal, the persistence and nature of your symptoms warrant further investigation. It is crucial to address these symptoms promptly to ensure that any potential complications are managed effectively. Please consider scheduling an appointment with a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail and receive appropriate care.
