Orthodontic issues
Hello, Doctor.
Last November, I wanted to get my teeth straightened, but I discovered that I had periodontal disease, so I first treated the periodontal disease and had four wisdom teeth and four canine teeth extracted.
The treatment for periodontal disease is now complete.
However, I have received an admission notice from the UK and will be going abroad at the end of February, possibly staying for one to two years.
Should I get orthodontic treatment abroad, or should I stabilize my teeth first and wait until I return to my home country for the orthodontic treatment? I look forward to your prompt response.
Thank you.

First, maintain good oral hygiene before considering orthodontic treatment, so it is advisable to stabilize the teeth and return to the home country before proceeding with orthodontics.

Deciding whether to get braces abroad or wait until you return to Taiwan involves several considerations, particularly regarding your dental health, the quality of care you can expect, and the logistics of treatment. Here are some factors to consider:
1. Current Dental Condition: Since you have recently completed treatment for periodontal disease and had multiple extractions, it is crucial to ensure that your mouth is stable before starting orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment can put additional stress on your teeth and gums, especially if there are underlying issues. If your dentist in Taiwan has advised you that your dental health is stable and ready for braces, that’s a positive sign.
2. Quality of Care: Research the orthodontic care available in the country you will be moving to. The standards of dental care can vary significantly from one country to another. In the UK, for example, there are many qualified orthodontists, but it’s essential to check their credentials, reviews, and the technology they use. If you have specific preferences for the type of braces (metal, ceramic, lingual, or clear aligners), ensure that these options are available and that the orthodontists are experienced in using them.
3. Continuity of Care: Orthodontic treatment typically requires regular adjustments and follow-ups. If you start treatment abroad, consider how easy it will be to maintain continuity of care. Will you be able to return to the same orthodontist for adjustments? If you plan to stay abroad for one to two years, you may need to find a new orthodontist in the UK, which could complicate your treatment plan.
4. Cost Considerations: Dental care costs can vary widely between countries. In Taiwan, orthodontic treatment might be covered partially by national health insurance, while in the UK, you may need to pay out-of-pocket, especially if you choose private care. It’s essential to get a clear understanding of the costs involved in both scenarios.
5. Timing and Convenience: If you start treatment in Taiwan, you can have the advantage of being in a familiar environment with a dentist you trust. If you wait until you are in the UK, consider how long it might take to get an appointment and how quickly you can start treatment. If you are in a rush to get braces due to school commitments, this could influence your decision.
6. Personal Preference: Lastly, consider your comfort level. If you feel anxious about starting treatment in a new country where you may not be familiar with the healthcare system, it might be more reassuring to complete your treatment in Taiwan.
In conclusion, if your dental health is stable and you feel confident in the orthodontic options available in the UK, starting treatment abroad could be a viable option. However, if you have any reservations about the quality of care or continuity of treatment, it may be best to wait until you return to Taiwan. Consulting with your current dentist about your plans and getting their professional opinion can also provide valuable insight into your decision-making process.
