Male pattern baldness
Male pattern baldness, using hair growth solutions containing Minoxidil (Rogaine).
Is it effective? Response from Dr.
Cheng Li-Chen, Dermatologist: Hello! According to studies, applying 2% Minoxidil topically has shown that 63% of users experience improvement; most see a reduction in hair loss, while a small percentage experience increased hair density, with 6.6% showing significant visible improvement.
Dr.
Cheng Li-Chen from the Taoyuan Hospital, Department of Dermatology, respectfully replies to further inquiries: 1.
I visited the dermatology department at Tainan Hospital on January 14th for male pattern baldness, where the doctor prescribed POLYTAR EMOLLIENT solution to be applied to the scalp after washing my hair.
I was instructed to massage my scalp with my fingertips for 5-10 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with water, 2-3 times a week.
However, when I use (a bottle cap) or (a small amount), I notice that massaging my scalp causes even more hair to fall out.
2.
I purchased Minoxidil (Rogaine) hair growth solution and shampoo myself, and similarly, massaging my scalp results in hair loss.
3.
After sleeping at night, I wake up to find more hair on my pillow than before.
Why is it that despite using these treatments, I am experiencing more hair loss than before? Should I consider medication or other options?

More Info
Minoxidil, commonly known by its brand name Rogaine, is a topical treatment widely used for male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). The question of its effectiveness is a common concern among those experiencing hair loss. According to various studies, including those referenced by dermatologists, Minoxidil has been shown to be effective for a significant portion of users. Specifically, research indicates that approximately 63% of individuals using a 2% solution of Minoxidil experience some degree of improvement, with many reporting a reduction in hair loss and some experiencing an increase in hair density. Notably, about 6.6% of users report a visibly significant improvement in their hair growth.
The mechanism by which Minoxidil works is primarily through vasodilation, which enhances blood circulation to the hair follicles. This increased blood flow can help revitalize shrunken hair follicles, thereby promoting hair regrowth and slowing down hair loss. However, it is important to note that the effectiveness of Minoxidil can vary from person to person. Some users may experience more pronounced results than others, and it may take several months of consistent use before any noticeable changes occur.
In response to the concerns raised about increased hair loss during the initial stages of Minoxidil treatment, it is not uncommon for users to experience a phenomenon known as "shedding." This occurs as the hair follicles transition from a resting phase to a growth phase, and it can temporarily lead to increased hair loss. This shedding is often a sign that the treatment is beginning to work, as it allows for new hair to grow in its place. However, if hair loss continues or worsens significantly after several months of use, it may be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional.
For those who find that Minoxidil alone is not sufficient, combining it with other treatments may be beneficial. Finasteride, an oral medication that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), is often recommended alongside Minoxidil. DHT is a hormone that contributes to hair loss in genetically predisposed individuals. By reducing DHT levels, Finasteride can help prevent further hair loss and promote regrowth. However, it is essential to discuss any potential side effects and the appropriateness of this medication with a healthcare provider, especially for individuals with a history of mood disorders or other health concerns.
In summary, Minoxidil can be an effective treatment for male pattern baldness, with many users experiencing positive results. However, individual responses can vary, and it may take time to see significant improvements. If you are experiencing increased hair loss or have concerns about the effectiveness of Minoxidil, it is crucial to consult with a dermatologist or healthcare provider. They can provide personalized recommendations and discuss additional treatment options, such as Finasteride, to help manage hair loss effectively.
