Discomfort when blinking?
I underwent retinal laser treatment on my right eye about six months ago, but this morning when I woke up, I noticed a slight swelling and pain near the cheekbone close to the eye when I blinked forcefully with my right eye.
This sensation disappeared after about three minutes of getting up, but was replaced by a noticeable feeling of fatigue in my right eye.
Should I seek medical attention?

Hello: This situation may be caused by sleeping posture or temporary discomfort after adapting to new retinal laser fixation.
However, the sensation of pressure and pain around the eyes, along with subsequent eye fatigue, may be due to dry eye, eye strain, or other ocular issues.
It is recommended that you immediately stop using electronic devices, reading, or any activities that may exacerbate the strain on your eyes.
You can try closing your eyes to rest for a while or using artificial tears to lubricate your eyes.
If the symptoms persist or worsen, I suggest you see an ophthalmologist for an examination.

Experiencing discomfort after a laser treatment, such as retinal laser photocoagulation, can be concerning, especially if it involves symptoms like pain, fatigue, or unusual sensations in the eye. Given your description of the symptoms—specifically the transient pain near the cheekbone and the subsequent feeling of fatigue in the right eye—it's essential to consider a few factors before deciding whether to seek medical attention.
Firstly, it's important to understand that some degree of discomfort can be expected after laser treatments. The procedure itself can cause temporary irritation or inflammation in the treated area, which might manifest as a sensation of pressure or mild pain. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen, it could indicate a complication that requires further evaluation.
Here are some considerations to help you determine whether you should see a doctor:
1. Duration and Severity of Symptoms: If the discomfort is fleeting and resolves quickly, as you described (lasting only a few minutes), it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, if the pain becomes more intense, lasts longer, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as vision changes, increased sensitivity to light, or persistent redness, you should seek medical attention promptly.
2. Visual Changes: Any new or worsening visual symptoms, such as blurriness, flashes of light, or floaters, warrant a visit to your eye doctor. These could be signs of complications such as retinal detachment or other issues related to the laser treatment.
3. Frequency of Symptoms: If this is an isolated incident, it may not be alarming. However, if you find that similar symptoms recur frequently, it would be wise to consult with your eye care provider to rule out any underlying issues.
4. Underlying Conditions: If you have a history of eye conditions, such as glaucoma or retinal problems, or if you are experiencing symptoms that are atypical for you, it’s advisable to get checked out.
5. Professional Guidance: When in doubt, it’s always better to err on the side of caution. Contacting your eye care professional for advice can provide peace of mind. They may recommend a follow-up examination to ensure everything is healing properly and that no complications have arisen.
In summary, while transient discomfort after laser treatment can be normal, persistent or worsening symptoms, especially those affecting your vision, should prompt a visit to your eye doctor. They can perform a thorough examination to assess the health of your eye and determine if any further treatment is necessary. Remember, your eye health is paramount, and it’s always best to seek professional advice when you have concerns.
