Post-retinal laser treatment
Hello, doctor.
I had a laser treatment for a small hole four days ago.
I don't think there were more than ten shots, and I didn't see any shadows in my vision afterward.
However, four days later, I still feel a slight pressure deep in the treated eye.
It's not painful, just a bit strange.
Is this normal? Should I be concerned that this feeling will last forever? Thank you.

Hello Mr.
Li: Laser treatment is a form of ablation, so there will definitely be some discomfort after the procedure, but it will improve after a period of time.

Hello! It’s completely understandable to have concerns after undergoing laser treatment for a retinal hole, especially when experiencing unusual sensations in the treated eye. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a sensation of pressure or fullness in the eye, which is not uncommon following such procedures.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that after laser treatment, the eye may go through a period of healing where various sensations can occur. The laser treatment itself can cause some temporary inflammation or irritation in the eye, which may lead to feelings of pressure or discomfort. This sensation can be attributed to several factors:
1. Healing Process: After laser treatment, the eye undergoes a healing process. This can involve swelling or inflammation in the area where the laser was applied. Such sensations are often temporary and should gradually subside as the eye heals.
2. Post-Operative Inflammation: The laser treatment can induce a mild inflammatory response. This inflammation can lead to sensations of pressure or fullness, which typically resolve within a few days to weeks as the inflammation decreases.
3. Dry Eye Symptoms: Post-operative dryness is another common issue. The eye may not produce enough tears during the healing phase, leading to discomfort, a feeling of pressure, or even a sensation of something being "stuck" in the eye. Using artificial tears can help alleviate these symptoms.
4. Visual Adjustment: After any eye surgery, including laser treatments, the brain and eyes may take some time to adjust to the changes in vision. This adjustment period can sometimes manifest as unusual sensations or discomfort.
Regarding your concern about whether this sensation will be permanent, it is highly unlikely. Most patients find that any unusual sensations diminish significantly as the eye continues to heal. However, if the sensation persists or worsens, or if you experience any new symptoms such as significant pain, changes in vision, or flashes of light, it is crucial to consult your ophthalmologist. They can perform a thorough examination to ensure that there are no complications, such as retinal detachment or other issues that may require attention.
In summary, while the sensations you are experiencing are likely part of the normal healing process following laser treatment, it is always best to err on the side of caution. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to reach out to your eye care provider for further evaluation. They can provide reassurance and guidance tailored to your specific situation. Wishing you a smooth recovery and improved comfort in your eye!
