Postoperative care for inguinal hernia repair?
Hello Doctor, I am currently nearly one month post laparoscopic bilateral inguinal hernia repair surgery.
The surgeon advised me not to lift heavy objects or engage in vigorous exercise for one month.
However, I found online information suggesting that I should also avoid prolonged standing or sitting.
Due to work obligations, I occasionally find myself standing or walking for over an hour, or sitting in traffic while driving for more than two hours without the opportunity to get up and move (which is not typical for me).
I would like to know if this situation could negatively affect my recovery after the hernia surgery and increase the risk of recurrence.
Thank you.

Increased intra-abdominal pressure is associated with a higher recurrence rate.
The actions you described should not significantly increase intra-abdominal pressure.

Post-operative care following inguinal hernia surgery is crucial for ensuring a smooth recovery and minimizing the risk of complications, including recurrence of the hernia. After undergoing laparoscopic bilateral inguinal hernia repair, it is essential to adhere to your surgeon's recommendations and be mindful of your activities during the recovery period.
Key Post-Operative Care Tips:
1. Avoid Heavy Lifting and Strenuous Activities: As advised by your surgeon, refrain from lifting heavy objects or engaging in vigorous exercise for at least a month post-surgery. This is important because increased abdominal pressure can strain the surgical site and potentially lead to a recurrence of the hernia.
2. Manage Sitting and Standing: While it is understandable that your work may require prolonged sitting or standing, it is advisable to take breaks whenever possible. If you find yourself sitting for extended periods, try to stand up and walk around briefly every 30-60 minutes to promote circulation and reduce the risk of complications. If you must sit for long periods, ensure your posture is correct to avoid additional strain on your abdomen.
3. Monitor for Symptoms: Pay attention to any unusual symptoms such as increased pain, swelling, or a bulge in the groin area. These could be signs of complications or recurrence. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
4. Gradual Return to Normal Activities: After the initial recovery phase, you can gradually resume normal activities. However, listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard. If you experience discomfort, it may be a sign that you need to take it easy.
5. Diet and Hydration: Maintaining a healthy diet and staying hydrated can aid in your recovery. A diet rich in fiber can help prevent constipation, which is important as straining during bowel movements can increase abdominal pressure.
6. Follow-Up Appointments: Ensure you attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon. These visits are essential for monitoring your recovery and addressing any concerns you may have.
7. Pain Management: Use prescribed pain medications as directed, and consider over-the-counter options if necessary. Managing pain effectively can help you engage in light activities sooner.
8. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking can impair healing, and excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with medications and recovery. It is best to avoid both during your recovery period.
Addressing Your Concerns:
Regarding your specific situation of occasionally standing for over an hour or sitting for more than two hours due to work commitments, it is generally acceptable as long as you are not experiencing significant discomfort or pain. While prolonged sitting or standing can increase abdominal pressure, the key is to balance these activities with regular movement and breaks.
If you are cautious and attentive to your body’s signals, these activities should not significantly hinder your recovery. However, if you notice any worsening of symptoms or new discomfort, it would be wise to consult your surgeon for personalized advice.
In summary, while it is important to follow your surgeon's guidelines, being mindful of your body and making adjustments to your routine can help facilitate a successful recovery from inguinal hernia surgery. Always prioritize your health and well-being, and do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider with any concerns.
