Mid-pregnancy discharge
Hello, I am currently 18 weeks pregnant.
During my 17-week check-up, I had pink discharge, and the doctor said it was due to cervical abrasion, which requires no treatment.
After the appointment, I had a small amount of pink or blood-tinged discharge for three days (only noticeable when wiping, no need for panty liners).
For the next four days, I only had a small amount of clear discharge.
On the fifth day, I started to experience a larger amount of discharge once a day (feeling like a lump is coming out, which also happened before my 17-week check-up).
The color was yellow-green, with no itching, odor, or discomfort in the genital area.
After that, the discharge returned to normal, with a slight amount or none at all.
When I looked with a mirror at the vaginal opening, it appeared white, but when I wiped with tissue, it was yellow-green.
Is this discharge normal? Additionally, I have some leftover "Clindamycin vaginal cream" that a previous doctor prescribed.
Can I use it on my own? Is the usage once a day, or every few days?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the increased discharge during pregnancy is due to hormonal changes.
However, if there are any symptoms, it is important to consult a physician for evaluation.
Self-medication is not recommended.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
During mid-pregnancy, it is common for women to experience various types of vaginal discharge, and understanding what is normal versus what may require medical attention is crucial for both maternal and fetal health. Based on your description, it appears that you have been experiencing some changes in your discharge, including pinkish spotting and a yellow-green discharge without associated itching or odor.
Firstly, the pinkish discharge you experienced after your cervical examination could be attributed to cervical irritation, which is not uncommon during pregnancy, especially after a pelvic exam. This type of spotting can occur due to the increased blood flow to the cervix and is generally not a cause for concern if it is minimal and resolves quickly. The fact that you have had only a small amount of pink or blood-tinged discharge for a few days and then transitioned to clear discharge is typically a reassuring sign.
However, the yellow-green discharge you mentioned raises some questions. While the absence of itching and odor is a positive sign, yellow-green discharge can sometimes indicate an infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection, even if you are not experiencing discomfort. It is essential to monitor the situation closely. If the discharge persists, increases in volume, or if you develop any additional symptoms such as itching, burning, or a foul odor, you should contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Regarding the use of "克黴樂陰道錠" (Clindamycin vaginal cream), it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider before using any medication during pregnancy, even if it was previously prescribed. Self-medicating can pose risks, and your doctor can provide guidance based on your specific situation. If your doctor has prescribed this medication in the past, they will be able to determine if it is appropriate for your current symptoms and how to use it correctly. Typically, such medications are used once daily for a specified duration, but the exact regimen should be confirmed with your healthcare provider.
In summary, while some discharge during pregnancy can be normal, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. They can provide the best advice tailored to your situation, ensuring both your health and the health of your baby are prioritized. Regular prenatal check-ups and open communication with your healthcare team are vital components of a healthy pregnancy.
