Frequent urination issue?

This winter, I have been experiencing frequent urination, with only a small amount each time.
As soon as I feel the urge, I rush to the bathroom.
I have a history of gastric ulcers and have been taking TAKEPRON OD 30MG/TAB daily for over two months.
Could this medication be causing my frequent urination?

Dr. Fu Shizhang reply Urology

Theoretically, this medication should not cause that.
Increased frequency of urination in winter is related to the body's water metabolism.
However, if accompanied by urgency, it may indicate bladder overactivity.
It is advisable to consult a urologist to alleviate the symptoms.
Online consultations cannot replace an in-person evaluation and physical examination by a physician.
If there is an underlying condition, it is still recommended to seek care at a medical facility.

More Info

Takepron OD (which contains the active ingredient rabeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) commonly used to treat conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastric ulcers. While it is effective in reducing stomach acid, it is not typically associated with urinary side effects, including frequent urination.
Frequent urination, or polyuria, can be influenced by various factors, including fluid intake, environmental conditions (like cold weather), and underlying medical conditions. In your case, you mentioned experiencing frequent urination during the winter months, which could be related to the body's response to cold temperatures. Cold weather can lead to increased urine production as the body attempts to maintain its core temperature, resulting in more frequent trips to the bathroom. Additionally, the body's metabolism of fluids can change with the seasons, contributing to this symptom.

It is also important to consider other potential causes of frequent urination. Conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder overactivity, diabetes, or prostate issues in men can lead to increased urinary frequency. Given that you have been experiencing this symptom for some time, it may be beneficial to consult a urologist for a thorough evaluation. They can perform tests to rule out any underlying conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Regarding the medications you are taking, while Takepron OD is unlikely to cause frequent urination, other medications or combinations of medications might have an impact on urinary function. For instance, certain diuretics or medications that affect the bladder can lead to increased urination. However, since Takepron is not known to have such effects, it is less likely to be the culprit in your case.

If you are experiencing urgency (a sudden, strong need to urinate) along with frequency, this could indicate bladder overactivity, which is a condition that can be evaluated and treated by a urologist. Treatment options may include lifestyle modifications, bladder training exercises, or medications specifically designed to manage bladder overactivity.

In summary, while Takepron OD is not typically associated with frequent urination, your symptoms may be influenced by other factors, including environmental conditions and potential underlying medical issues. It is advisable to seek medical attention to explore these symptoms further, especially if they are affecting your quality of life. A healthcare professional can provide a comprehensive assessment and recommend appropriate interventions to help manage your urinary symptoms effectively.
