Is it possible to be pregnant?

Hello doctor, my menstrual periods were on November 15, December 17, and January 15.
I had unprotected intercourse on January 26 and January 28.
I would like to know what the chances of getting pregnant are.
During these two days, I noticed that my breasts are more sensitive, similar to the premenstrual feeling, but it seems like there is still some time until my next period.
Thank you for your help.

Elaine, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/02/03

Hello, it is recommended to practice safe behaviors to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections, while also preventing unintended pregnancies.
If your period is delayed, you can take a home pregnancy test or visit a gynecologist for evaluation.
Thank you.

Determining whether you are likely to be pregnant involves understanding your menstrual cycle, the timing of sexual intercourse, and recognizing early pregnancy symptoms. Based on the information you provided, your menstrual cycle appears to be approximately 30-32 days long, with your last three periods occurring on November 15, December 17, and January 15. Given that you had unprotected sexual intercourse on January 26 and 28, you may be within the window of time when conception could occur.

In a typical menstrual cycle, ovulation usually occurs about 14 days before the start of your next period. If we assume your cycle is consistent, ovulation would likely have occurred around January 29, which means that the timing of your sexual activity could align with your fertile window. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you ovulated shortly after your sexual encounters, there is a possibility of pregnancy.

You mentioned experiencing breast sensitivity, which is a common early sign of pregnancy. Other early symptoms can include fatigue, nausea, increased urination, and missed periods. However, it’s important to note that breast tenderness can also occur due to hormonal changes related to your menstrual cycle, particularly in the luteal phase, which is the time between ovulation and the start of your next period.

To confirm whether you are pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. For the most accurate results, it is recommended to take the test after you have missed your period, as this allows hCG levels to rise sufficiently for detection.

If you are experiencing significant anxiety or uncertainty about your situation, consider scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider. They can provide you with a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than a urine test and can detect pregnancy earlier. Additionally, they can discuss any concerns you may have regarding your menstrual cycle, sexual health, and family planning.

In summary, based on your cycle and the timing of your sexual activity, there is a possibility that you could be pregnant. Monitoring your symptoms and taking a pregnancy test after your expected period will provide you with clearer answers. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
