A small white bump has appeared on the glans penis?

Tonight, I suddenly noticed a small white bump above the right side of my urethral opening while urinating.
It looks like a blister, but I don't feel any discomfort, and I haven't engaged in sexual activity.
It appeared suddenly in the evening.
My urethral opening often rubs against my underwear, so I'm not sure if it's due to excessive friction or possibly eczema.

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: It seems like friction is more likely the cause.
You can observe it for now, but if it enlarges, becomes red, or breaks the skin, you should seek medical attention.
Wishing you good health.

When you notice a small white bump on the urethra, it can be concerning, but it's important to understand that there are several potential causes, many of which are benign. Here are some common causes and considerations regarding small white bumps in that area:
1. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that can appear around the glans (the head of the penis). They are normal anatomical variations and are not associated with any disease or infection. They are often mistaken for warts or other lesions but are completely benign.

2. Fordyce Spots: These are small, painless, pale bumps that can appear on the shaft of the penis or around the urethra. They are sebaceous glands that are not associated with any health issues and do not require treatment.

3. Folliculitis: This condition occurs when hair follicles become inflamed, often due to infection or irritation. If the bump is red and tender, it could be a sign of folliculitis, which may require topical treatment.

4. Cysts: Sebaceous cysts can develop in various areas of the body, including the genital region. These are usually painless and can be left alone unless they become infected or bothersome.

5. Irritation or Friction: As you mentioned, if you have been experiencing friction from your underwear, it could lead to irritation or a small bump due to localized inflammation. This is often self-limiting and may resolve with proper hygiene and avoiding further irritation.

6. Infections: While you indicated that you have not engaged in sexual activity recently, infections such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can sometimes present as bumps or lesions. If the bump changes in appearance, becomes painful, or is accompanied by other symptoms (such as discharge, itching, or burning), it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.

7. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can also manifest as bumps or lesions in the genital area. If you have a history of skin conditions, this might be a possibility.

Given that the bump is not causing any discomfort and you have not had recent sexual activity, it is likely to be benign. However, it is essential to monitor the bump for any changes in size, color, or sensation. If it persists, becomes painful, or if you develop other symptoms, it would be prudent to seek evaluation from a healthcare professional, preferably a urologist or dermatologist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend treatment if necessary.

In summary, while a small white bump on the urethra can be alarming, many potential causes are harmless. Maintaining good hygiene, avoiding irritants, and monitoring the bump for changes are advisable steps. If you have any concerns or if the situation changes, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
