Post-operative issues after circumcision?

Doctor, I have two questions.
Today is the 16th day after my circumcision.

1.
Since it hasn't completely healed yet, I am still applying ointment.
However, after applying it, the foreskin retracts and covers almost half of the glans.
Is this due to the lubrication from the ointment or the elasticity of the foreskin? Is this normal?
2.
I had my circumcision done with a new generation circumcision device, so the sutures haven't all fallen out yet.
Sometimes, when the foreskin retracts and covers almost half of the glans, there are marks on the glans.
Is this normal?

Hello: Both are considered normal as long as there is no redness of the skin.
You can wait for the circumcision stitches to fall off.
Wishing you good health.

After circumcision, it is common for patients to have concerns about the healing process and the changes they observe in the area. Let's address your questions regarding the healing and normal changes post-circumcision.

1. Stretching of the Skin and Lubrication: It is normal for the skin of the penis, including the remaining foreskin, to have some degree of elasticity. When you apply ointment, it can indeed provide lubrication, which may make the skin feel more mobile and allow it to stretch more easily. This is a normal response, especially in the early stages of healing. The ointment helps to keep the area moist, which is beneficial for healing and can prevent the formation of scabs that might otherwise restrict movement. However, if you notice that the foreskin is retracting excessively or causing discomfort, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to ensure that the healing process is proceeding normally.

2. Presence of Stitches and Marks on the Glans: After circumcision, particularly with the use of a newer technique such as a circumcision device, it is common for stitches to remain in place for a period of time. These stitches are usually absorbable and will dissolve on their own. The marks or indentations you see on the glans (the head of the penis) may be due to the pressure from the foreskin or the stitches. This is generally normal, especially if the foreskin is still partially covering the glans. As healing progresses and the swelling decreases, you should see an improvement in the appearance of the area. If the marks are persistent or if you experience pain, redness, or swelling, it is important to follow up with your surgeon or a urologist to rule out any complications such as infection or improper healing.

Additional Considerations for Post-Circumcision Care:
- Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding cleaning and care of the surgical site. Avoid any harsh soaps or chemicals that could irritate the area.

- Monitoring for Complications: Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that is not clear. If you experience severe pain or fever, seek medical attention promptly.

- Avoiding Irritation: Try to avoid tight clothing that may rub against the area, as this can cause irritation. Loose-fitting underwear can help minimize discomfort.

- Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider. They will assess your healing progress and address any concerns you may have.

- Patience in Healing: Healing after circumcision can take several weeks. It is important to be patient and allow your body the time it needs to heal properly.
In conclusion, while some stretching and marks on the glans can be normal post-circumcision, it is essential to monitor your healing process and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. They can provide personalized advice and reassurance based on your specific situation.
