Taking emergency contraceptive pills?
Hello, doctor.
I have been taking the pre-medication for a month now, and today is the 12th day of the second month.
I took the medication at 10 PM, and around 10:50 PM, I had diarrhea that was watery.
I would like to know if this affects the efficacy of the medication.
Should I take an additional dose? If so, is it the same as the method for taking a missed dose?

When it comes to the effectiveness of birth control pills, diarrhea can indeed have an impact, particularly if it is severe or occurs shortly after taking the pill. Birth control pills work by delivering hormones that prevent ovulation, and they need to be absorbed into the bloodstream to be effective. If you experience diarrhea shortly after taking your pill, there is a possibility that your body may not have absorbed the hormones properly, which could reduce the effectiveness of the pill.
In general, if you have diarrhea that is watery and occurs within two hours of taking your birth control pill, it is recommended to take an additional pill to ensure that you maintain effective contraception. This is similar to the protocol for missed pills. If you experience diarrhea for more than 24 hours, it is advisable to use a backup method of contraception, such as condoms, until you are sure that your birth control is effective again.
It is important to note that not all instances of diarrhea will affect the pill's effectiveness. Mild diarrhea that does not occur immediately after taking the pill is unlikely to have a significant impact. However, if you are unsure or if the diarrhea persists, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
Additionally, if you are experiencing frequent diarrhea, it may be a sign of an underlying health issue that should be addressed. Staying hydrated is crucial, especially if you are losing fluids due to diarrhea. Make sure to drink plenty of water and consider electrolyte solutions to replenish lost fluids.
In summary, if you experience watery diarrhea shortly after taking your birth control pill, consider taking an additional pill and consult your healthcare provider for further guidance. Always keep in mind the importance of using backup contraception if you are uncertain about the effectiveness of your birth control method.
