Diarrhea and weight loss?
Hello doctor, I hope you can help me with my concerns.
This is regarding my mother.
Recently, she has been experiencing diarrhea for two months, and she has lost weight.
Every weekday at noon, whenever she eats, she starts to have abdominal pain and rushes to the bathroom, having multiple loose stools in a short period.
After she finishes, the abdominal pain subsides, but on weekends, she doesn't experience diarrhea as much.
Other symptoms include borborygmi.
Because of this, her weight has decreased.
She visited a clinic, and the doctor prescribed medication.
Today marks the third day of her medication.
Aside from some improvement in abdominal bloating and a decrease in the frequency of borborygmi, she still experiences diarrhea around noon.
However, my mother mentioned that the frequency of her bathroom visits has decreased, but I cannot confirm this completely.
I have been reading articles online about weight loss, and the more I read, the more worried I become, so I am really concerned.

Hello! Since diarrhea can lead to weight loss, please continue your treatment in the hepatobiliary and gastroenterology department.
If your weight continues to decrease by more than 5-10% and the cause remains undetermined, please consult the endocrinology department.

Chronic diarrhea and weight loss can be concerning symptoms, especially when they persist for an extended period, as in your mother's case. It’s essential to understand the potential causes and implications of these symptoms, as well as the importance of proper medical evaluation and management.
Chronic diarrhea is generally defined as having loose or watery stools that occur more than three times a day for at least four weeks. There are various potential causes for chronic diarrhea, including infections, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), malabsorption syndromes, and certain medications. Given that your mother experiences diarrhea predominantly during weekdays and not on weekends, this pattern may suggest a stress-related component or dietary triggers that could be exacerbating her symptoms.
Weight loss accompanying chronic diarrhea can be particularly alarming. It often indicates that the body is not absorbing nutrients effectively, which can lead to malnutrition and further health complications. In your mother’s case, the weight loss could be attributed to the loss of fluids and electrolytes due to diarrhea, as well as a potential decrease in food intake if she is avoiding meals that trigger her symptoms.
The fact that your mother has seen a doctor and is currently on medication is a positive step. It’s crucial to follow the prescribed treatment plan and monitor her symptoms closely. If her diarrhea persists despite medication, it may be necessary to revisit the healthcare provider for further evaluation. This could include additional tests such as stool studies, blood tests, or imaging studies to identify any underlying conditions that may be contributing to her symptoms.
In the meantime, here are some general dietary and lifestyle recommendations that may help manage her symptoms:
1. Stay Hydrated: Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, so it’s essential for your mother to drink plenty of fluids. Oral rehydration solutions can be beneficial as they help replenish lost electrolytes.
2. Dietary Adjustments: A bland diet may help ease symptoms. Foods that are easy to digest, such as bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet), can be soothing. Avoiding high-fiber foods, dairy products, and fatty or spicy foods may also help reduce diarrhea.
3. Regular Meal Patterns: Eating smaller, more frequent meals rather than large meals can help manage symptoms. It may also be beneficial to keep a food diary to identify any specific foods that trigger her symptoms.
4. Probiotics: Incorporating probiotics into her diet may help restore the balance of gut bacteria, which can be beneficial for digestive health. Probiotics can be found in yogurt, kefir, and supplements.
5. Stress Management: Since your mother’s symptoms seem to fluctuate with her routine, exploring stress management techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or gentle exercise may be helpful.
6. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-ups with her healthcare provider are essential to monitor her condition and adjust treatment as necessary.
If your mother’s symptoms do not improve or worsen, it’s crucial to seek further medical attention. Chronic diarrhea can lead to significant health issues if left untreated, including severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Additionally, if there are any signs of more serious conditions, such as blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, or persistent fever, immediate medical attention is warranted.
In conclusion, while chronic diarrhea and weight loss can be distressing, understanding the potential causes and taking proactive steps can help manage the situation. Encourage your mother to maintain open communication with her healthcare provider and to seek support from family members during this challenging time.
