Bloating, with dull pain and distension in the lower left abdomen?

Hello, doctor.
In recent years, I have occasionally experienced a dull pain in the lower left abdomen, near the pelvic area.
This occurs regardless of whether I have eaten or not.
I tend to experience bloating, so it feels like gas is accumulating in that area.
After passing gas after a while, I feel more comfortable, but I don't understand why the gas would accumulate there.
Could this lead to any diseases? When I searched for related information, I found results about hernias, but my pain is not near the groin and there is no bulging, so it doesn't seem to fit that description.
I would like to consult about this, thank you.

The left side of the colon is generally narrower than the right side, which may lead to difficulties in bowel movements, abnormal intestinal peristalsis, or intestinal obstruction that could be more pronounced on the left side.
Possible causes include intestinal inflammation, diverticula, polyps or tumors, gynecological diseases, urinary tract diseases, and gastrointestinal dysfunction.
If there is frequent pain, it is advisable to follow up with outpatient examinations.
Wishing you good health!

Left lower abdominal discomfort and gas issues can be quite common and may arise from various underlying causes. Your description of experiencing a dull pain in the left lower abdomen, particularly near the pelvic area, along with a tendency to feel gassy, suggests that you might be dealing with gastrointestinal issues.
The left lower abdomen houses several important structures, including parts of the colon (specifically the sigmoid colon), the left ovary in females, and other pelvic organs. The discomfort you are experiencing could be linked to several factors:
1. Gas Accumulation: The sensation of gas moving through the intestines can lead to discomfort, especially if there is an accumulation of gas in the sigmoid colon. This area is often narrower than the right side of the colon, making it more susceptible to gas buildup. Foods that are high in fiber, carbonated beverages, or certain food intolerances (like lactose or gluten) can contribute to increased gas production.

2. Constipation: If you have a history of constipation, this could lead to a buildup of stool in the colon, which can cause discomfort and a feeling of fullness or bloating. The left side of the colon may be more affected if stool is not passing through efficiently.

3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): This functional gastrointestinal disorder can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. The pain often improves after passing gas or having a bowel movement, which aligns with your experience.

4. Diverticulitis: This condition occurs when small pouches (diverticula) in the colon become inflamed or infected. While it typically presents with more severe symptoms, mild diverticulitis can cause discomfort in the left lower abdomen.

5. Gynecological Issues: In females, left lower abdominal pain could also be related to ovarian issues, such as ovarian cysts or other reproductive system conditions.
6. Hernias: While you mentioned that you do not have a bulge or protrusion, it's important to note that hernias can sometimes present without visible signs. A thorough examination by a healthcare professional can help rule this out.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to monitor your condition closely. If the discomfort persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, significant changes in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss, it would be prudent to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may recommend diagnostic tests such as an abdominal ultrasound or a colonoscopy to evaluate the underlying cause of your symptoms.

In the meantime, consider dietary modifications to manage gas and bloating. Keeping a food diary may help identify any specific triggers. Increasing fiber intake gradually, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical activity can also promote healthy digestion and alleviate constipation.

In summary, while your symptoms may be benign and related to gas or minor gastrointestinal issues, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult with a healthcare professional if your symptoms do not improve or if you have concerns about potential underlying conditions.
