My bloating has not improved?
Hello doctor, my symptoms have been present for over a month.
I often feel a slight pain on the left side of my abdomen near the belly button, like a mild cramping sensation, as if something is poking from the inside out.
It hurts for a short time every day.
Last week, I visited a gastroenterologist who performed an ultrasound and diagnosed me with gas.
He prescribed medication, which provided some improvement last week, but I am still not fully recovered.
However, on Monday and Tuesday of this week, the pain returned frequently.
I went back to see the doctor yesterday, and he still said it was gas and prescribed more medication.
Why is gas so difficult to resolve? I’ve noticed that standing seems to alleviate the pain, while sitting makes it worse.
Doctor, what methods can more effectively improve this gas issue? Why is it causing cramping? I’ve never experienced this before.
Are there any specific foods I should eat or avoid?

Dr. Chen Qifeng reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello, pain or discomfort to the left of the navel is mostly related to the intestines.
In addition to bloating, it is important to monitor bowel habits, such as constipation or diarrhea.
Dietary adjustments should be prioritized, including reducing oil and dairy intake, opting for lighter meals, and avoiding overeating.
As for bloating and bowel habits, a physician can prescribe medication based on the symptoms.
Wishing you good health, Dr.

More Info
Persistent bloating and abdominal pain can be quite distressing, and it’s understandable that you are seeking effective relief. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing intermittent pain on the left side of your abdomen, which has been diagnosed as bloating by your gastroenterologist after an ultrasound examination. While bloating is a common issue, it can sometimes be challenging to manage, especially when it is accompanied by discomfort or pain.
Bloating can occur for various reasons, including dietary habits, gastrointestinal motility issues, or even stress and anxiety. Since you mentioned that the pain seems to be less when standing and more pronounced when sitting, this could suggest that your posture may be affecting your abdominal pressure and discomfort. When sitting, the abdominal cavity can become compressed, potentially exacerbating feelings of bloating and discomfort.
Here are some strategies that may help alleviate your symptoms:
1. Dietary Modifications: Certain foods are known to contribute to bloating. Common culprits include:
- High-FODMAP Foods: These are fermentable carbohydrates that can cause gas and bloating. Foods such as beans, lentils, certain fruits (like apples and pears), and dairy products can be problematic for some individuals.
- Carbonated Beverages: The bubbles in these drinks can lead to increased gas in the digestive tract.
- Processed Foods: These often contain additives and preservatives that can lead to digestive discomfort.
- Fatty Foods: High-fat meals can slow digestion and lead to bloating.
Keeping a food diary may help you identify specific triggers that worsen your symptoms.
2. Eating Habits: How you eat can also impact bloating. Consider the following:
- Eat Slowly: Eating too quickly can cause you to swallow air, which can contribute to bloating.
- Smaller Meals: Instead of three large meals, try eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day to ease the burden on your digestive system.
3. Physical Activity: Regular physical activity can help promote digestion and reduce bloating. Gentle exercises like walking or yoga can be particularly beneficial. You might find that certain positions, such as lying on your side or doing gentle stretches, can help relieve discomfort.
4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is essential for digestive health. Drinking plenty of water can help prevent constipation, which can contribute to bloating.
5. Over-the-Counter Remedies: There are various over-the-counter medications designed to relieve bloating and gas. Simethicone is a common ingredient in products that help reduce gas. However, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
6. Stress Management: Since you mentioned that you have a tendency towards anxiety, it’s worth considering the impact of stress on your digestive health. Stress can exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms, so incorporating relaxation techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises may be beneficial.
7. Follow-Up with Your Doctor: Since your symptoms have persisted despite treatment, it may be worthwhile to follow up with your gastroenterologist. They may consider further investigations to rule out other underlying conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), food intolerances, or other gastrointestinal disorders.
In conclusion, while bloating can be a common and frustrating issue, there are several strategies you can employ to help manage your symptoms. It’s essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to ensure that you receive the appropriate care and to rule out any serious underlying conditions. Remember that everyone’s body is different, and it may take some time to find the right combination of dietary and lifestyle changes that work for you.
