What are the types of circumcision procedures?
Hello, as I am still a student and the school year is approaching, I recently discovered that I have phimosis.
I would like to ask what kind of surgery is involved if I decide to undergo the procedure, and what the costs might be.
Since school is starting soon and I need to pay for some expenses, I want to see if I have the budget for the surgery.
Also, will it be inconvenient to attend classes after the surgery?
Regarding the image I took (http://myweb.hinet.net/home1/csmg/20040213-141157.jpg), it shows my condition when erect.
The opening does not hurt, but pulling it back does cause pain, and I can hardly pull it back at all without experiencing significant discomfort.
Therefore, I believe it is phimosis.
However, I have not had any symptoms since childhood (I am now 23), have never had an infection, and have not engaged in sexual intercourse (only occasional masturbation).
If I do not plan to engage in sexual activity in the near future, is it still necessary to rush into surgery?

Dr. Lai Ronghao reply Urology
Hello, A-Zhi: If phimosis is not infected, there is no need for urgent surgery.
If there are other symptoms, it is more appropriate to consult a urologist at the hospital.
This is a response from Dr.
Tu Hsiu-Hong, attending physician of the Urology Department at Hsinchu Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

More Info
Phimosis, a condition where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted over the glans of the penis, can be a source of discomfort and concern for many individuals, especially if it leads to pain during retraction or interferes with hygiene. If you are considering surgery, it's important to understand the options available, the associated costs, and the recovery process.
Surgical Options for Phimosis
1. Circumcision: This is the most common surgical procedure for phimosis. It involves the complete removal of the foreskin. Circumcision is typically performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's age and the specific circumstances.
2. Preputioplasty: This is a less invasive option where the foreskin is not completely removed but is instead incised and widened. This procedure may be suitable for those who wish to retain some foreskin.
3. Dorsal Slit Procedure: This involves making a slit in the foreskin to relieve the tightness. It's usually a temporary solution and may not be suitable for everyone.
Costs of Surgery
The cost of phimosis surgery can vary widely based on several factors, including:
- Location: Prices can differ significantly depending on the healthcare facility and geographic area.
- Type of Procedure: Circumcision is generally more expensive than preputioplasty or a dorsal slit.
- Insurance Coverage: If you have health insurance, check with your provider to see if the procedure is covered. Many plans cover medically necessary surgeries, which phimosis can be considered if it causes pain or hygiene issues.
In the United States, the cost of circumcision can range from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the factors mentioned above. It's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for a more accurate estimate based on your specific situation.
Recovery Concerns
Post-operative recovery from phimosis surgery generally involves:
- Pain Management: Some discomfort is expected after surgery, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medications.
- Hygiene: Keeping the surgical area clean is crucial to prevent infection. Your doctor will provide specific instructions on how to care for the area post-surgery.
- Activity Restrictions: You may need to avoid strenuous activities, including sports and heavy lifting, for a few weeks. This is important to allow proper healing.
- Return to School: Depending on the type of surgery and your recovery, you may be able to return to school within a week or two. However, if you experience significant discomfort or require pain medication, you might need additional time off.
Should You Rush into Surgery?
Given that you are currently asymptomatic and have not experienced infections or significant issues, it may not be urgent to undergo surgery, especially if you are not planning to engage in sexual activity in the near future. However, if you experience pain or if the condition worsens, it would be wise to consult a urologist for further evaluation.
In conclusion, while surgery can provide relief from phimosis, it is essential to weigh the benefits against the costs and recovery time. Consulting with a healthcare professional can help you make an informed decision based on your specific circumstances and lifestyle. If you have any further questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to a medical professional for personalized advice.
