Throat bleeding
Hello Doctor, I am a patient who visited you at the end of January.
During the nasopharyngoscopy, I felt very uncomfortable and ended up removing it myself (you might remember).
I had mentioned that two days prior to the examination, I experienced significant bleeding from my throat, which stopped, leaving a white substance.
Later, you used an endoscope to examine my nasopharynx (and you could see the throat area), and you said it looked very clean with no significant issues.
However, a couple of days later, I caught a severe cold and didn't fully recover until late February.
In mid-February, I experienced throat pain (sharp, sudden pain that would disappear) which continued until early March.
Due to my concerns, I went to Taipei Veterans General Hospital for another nasopharyngoscopy, and the doctor said there were no significant issues with my nasopharynx, only slight redness likely due to congestion and inflammation.
Recently, I have been experiencing pain (possibly at the junction of the throat and soft palate or the throat area), which sometimes radiates to my gums or teeth (not superficial).
Last night, I suddenly experienced bleeding from the same area as before, but the amount was much less than the incident in January.
During that episode, I touched the area slightly with a tissue, and the bleeding stopped, but the exact bleeding point was unclear.
After the bleeding stopped, I experienced noticeable pain.
I would appreciate your clarification on this matter.

If the cause or location of the bleeding cannot be determined, and if the bleeding persists, it is recommended to return to Taipei Veterans General Hospital or another medical center for further examination and evaluation.

More Info
Throat bleeding can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its causes, symptoms, and treatments is crucial for effective management. Based on your description, it seems you have experienced episodes of throat bleeding accompanied by pain and discomfort, which can be indicative of several underlying conditions.
Causes of Throat Bleeding
1. Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can lead to inflammation and irritation of the throat, causing bleeding. Conditions like pharyngitis or tonsillitis can result in sore throat and bleeding, especially if there is significant inflammation.
2. Trauma: Physical trauma to the throat, such as from a medical procedure (like a nasopharyngoscopy) or even vigorous coughing, can lead to bleeding. You mentioned that you performed the procedure yourself, which could have caused some irritation or injury.
3. Dryness and Irritation: Environmental factors, such as dry air or smoking, can irritate the throat lining, leading to bleeding. This is especially common in winter months or in heated indoor environments.
4. Underlying Medical Conditions: Conditions such as blood clotting disorders, hypertension, or even malignancies can lead to bleeding in the throat. Given your history of throat issues, it’s important to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
5. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can irritate the throat and lead to bleeding, especially if there is significant inflammation or ulceration.
Symptoms Associated with Throat Bleeding
- Pain: You mentioned experiencing sharp pain that comes and goes. This could be due to inflammation or irritation in the throat.
- Swelling: Inflammation can cause swelling in the throat, leading to discomfort and difficulty swallowing.
- Difficulty Breathing: If swelling is significant, it may cause difficulty in breathing, which is a medical emergency.
- Foul Breath: Infections can lead to bad breath due to the presence of bacteria.
- Fever: If an infection is present, you may experience fever and malaise.
Treatments for Throat Bleeding
1. Immediate Care: For minor bleeding, applying gentle pressure with a clean cloth or tissue can help stop the bleeding. Staying calm and avoiding further irritation is essential.
2. Hydration: Keeping the throat moist can help reduce irritation. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially warm teas or broths, can soothe the throat.
3. Humidification: Using a humidifier in your home can help maintain moisture in the air, which can alleviate dryness and irritation in the throat.
4. Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage pain and inflammation. If an infection is suspected, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
5. Avoid Irritants: Avoid smoking, alcohol, and spicy foods that can further irritate the throat.
6. Follow-up Care: Given your history of throat bleeding and pain, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further diagnostic tests, such as imaging studies or blood tests, to rule out any serious conditions.
7. Referral to Specialists: If the bleeding persists or if there are concerns about underlying conditions, a referral to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist may be necessary for further evaluation and management.
Conclusion
Throat bleeding can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help in managing the symptoms effectively. Given your recent experiences, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical attention if the bleeding recurs or worsens. Always communicate any changes in your symptoms to your healthcare provider, as they can provide tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
