Throat bleeding?

I recently caught a cold and have been coughing a lot without being able to bring up any phlegm.
I thought I was getting better, but just now while washing my hair, I suddenly had a nosebleed, and my mouth was filled with thick, bright red blood.
After rinsing my mouth for about 5 minutes, there is no more blood.
How should I manage my throat?

Xiao Zhu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/10/28

Dear Sir/Madam: It may just be mucosal inflammation.
Please visit the ENT outpatient clinic for an examination.

More Info

Throat bleeding can be alarming, especially when it occurs suddenly and without warning. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing a cold with a cough, and the bleeding occurred while you were washing your hair. There are several potential causes for throat bleeding, and understanding these can help you determine the best course of action.

Possible Causes of Throat Bleeding
1. Irritation or Injury: Coughing can cause irritation or even minor injuries to the throat, especially if you have been coughing frequently or forcefully. This can lead to small blood vessels breaking, resulting in blood in your throat.

2. Infection: Viral infections, such as the common cold, can lead to inflammation of the throat (pharyngitis) or tonsillitis, which may cause bleeding. If the infection is severe, it can lead to ulceration of the throat tissues.

3. Dryness: Dry air, especially during winter months or in air-conditioned environments, can dry out the throat and lead to cracking or bleeding.

4. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can irritate the throat and esophagus, leading to bleeding in some cases.

5. Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as blood disorders, high blood pressure, or tumors in the throat can also lead to bleeding, although these are less common.

Immediate Steps to Take
1. Stay Calm: The first step is to remain calm. Minor bleeding from the throat can often resolve on its own.

2. Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids to keep your throat moist. Warm liquids, such as herbal tea or warm water with honey, can be soothing.

3. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that could exacerbate throat irritation.

4. Rest Your Voice: Try to avoid talking too much or whispering, as this can strain your vocal cords and throat.

5. Use Humidifiers: If you are in a dry environment, consider using a humidifier to add moisture to the air.

When to Seek Medical Attention
While minor throat bleeding can often be managed at home, there are certain situations where you should seek medical attention:
- If the bleeding recurs or is heavy.

- If you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing.

- If you have a persistent sore throat that does not improve.

- If you notice other symptoms such as fever, chills, or significant pain.

Conclusion
In summary, throat bleeding can be caused by a variety of factors, including irritation from coughing, infections, or dryness. Immediate management involves staying calm, hydrating, and avoiding irritants. However, if the bleeding persists or is accompanied by concerning symptoms, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and treatment. Remember that your health is paramount, and seeking medical advice when in doubt is always a wise choice.
