Blood in the throat?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask you: Recently, I noticed some slight blood when clearing my throat (I clear my throat quite forcefully, similar to the way one would when vomiting, and afterwards my throat feels a bit sore).
Sometimes there is blood, and sometimes there isn't.
When I see blood, I get very anxious and keep clearing my throat to check the phlegm...
As a result, it seems like my throat pain has become more severe.
Could this be caused by me clearing my throat too forcefully?
Xiao Ke, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/08/13
Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, Xiaoke: Most bleeding is caused by ruptured microvessels due to excessive throat clearing.
It is recommended to drink more water and reduce throat clearing.
If bleeding persists, medical evaluation is necessary.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When you notice blood while clearing your throat, it can understandably cause concern. The presence of blood in your throat or sputum can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help you manage your symptoms and determine when to seek medical attention.
One common reason for blood in the throat is trauma to the mucous membranes. If you are clearing your throat forcefully, as you described, it can lead to irritation or even small tears in the delicate lining of your throat. This can result in minor bleeding, which may appear as streaks of blood in your saliva or phlegm. The pain you are experiencing afterward can also be attributed to this irritation.
Another potential cause could be an underlying condition such as a respiratory infection, allergies, or sinusitis. Infections can lead to inflammation and increased mucus production, which might prompt you to clear your throat more often. If the infection is severe, it could cause bleeding from inflamed tissues. Additionally, conditions like bronchitis or even more serious issues such as a pulmonary embolism or lung cancer, although less common, can also present with blood in the sputum.
If you have a history of smoking or exposure to irritants, this could also contribute to chronic throat irritation and bleeding. Furthermore, certain medications, particularly blood thinners or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can increase the risk of bleeding.
Given that you mentioned the blood appears intermittently and is accompanied by throat pain, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the bleeding persists, increases in frequency, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as difficulty breathing, significant pain, or fever, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies or a referral to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, consider the following recommendations to help manage your throat irritation:
1. Gentle Throat Clearing: Try to avoid forceful throat clearing. Instead, sip water or swallow to alleviate the urge to clear your throat.
2. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help keep your throat moist and reduce irritation.
3. Humidify Your Environment: Using a humidifier can add moisture to the air, which may help soothe an irritated throat.
4. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other environmental irritants that can exacerbate throat irritation.
5. Rest Your Voice: If your throat is sore, try to limit talking and give your vocal cords a break.
6. Over-the-Counter Remedies: Consider using throat lozenges or sprays that can provide temporary relief from pain and irritation.
In conclusion, while it is possible that your throat clearing is causing minor trauma leading to blood, it is essential to remain vigilant about your symptoms. If the bleeding continues or worsens, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and addressing any underlying issues early can prevent more significant complications.
