Post-laparoscopic surgery
Hello Doctor, I underwent laparoscopic surgery eight years ago.
Last year, my navel became inflamed for 4-5 months, and now it appears very dark (it looks like hyperpigmentation and has remained this way for a long time without returning to its original skin color), and it is also wrinkled.
Currently, my navel sometimes itches, and I occasionally feel discomfort above the navel.
Could this be related to the laparoscopic surgery, or could there be other underlying conditions? Thank you.

Dr. Zhang Shuhao reply Surgery
Umbilical pigmentation is caused by chronic inflammation of the wound and is usually not related to the recovery of internal organs.
If the scar tissue exhibits symptoms of pain or itching, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation to check for signs of infection.

Post-laparoscopic surgery symptoms can vary widely among individuals, and your concerns regarding changes in your umbilical area are valid and warrant attention. Given your history of laparoscopic surgery and the subsequent issues you've experienced, let's delve into the potential causes and implications of your symptoms.
Firstly, the discoloration and texture changes in your umbilical area, such as darkening and wrinkling, could be attributed to several factors. One possibility is post-surgical scarring. Laparoscopic surgery, while minimally invasive, can still lead to scarring, particularly if there was any inflammation or infection at the surgical site. The darkening of the skin could be a result of hyperpigmentation due to inflammation or irritation. This is not uncommon, especially in areas that have undergone trauma or surgery.
The itching sensation you describe may also be linked to the healing process. As the skin heals, it can become sensitive and prone to itching. Additionally, if there is any residual irritation from the surgical procedure or if the area has been exposed to moisture or friction, this could exacerbate the itching sensation. It's important to avoid scratching, as this can lead to further irritation or even infection.
The discomfort you feel above the umbilicus could be related to nerve regeneration post-surgery. During laparoscopic procedures, small incisions are made, and nerves in the area can be affected. As these nerves heal, they may cause sensations of discomfort or pain. This is often temporary, but if the discomfort persists or worsens, it should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
In terms of whether these symptoms could indicate a more serious underlying condition, it is essential to consider the possibility of an infection or other complications. If your umbilical area was inflamed for several months, it may suggest that there was an ongoing issue that needs to be addressed. Signs of infection could include increased redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge from the umbilical area. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
Moreover, other conditions such as umbilical hernias can also present with discomfort or changes in the umbilical area. A hernia occurs when tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles, and it can sometimes develop after surgery. If you have a bulge or noticeable change in the contour of your abdomen near the umbilicus, this could be a sign of a hernia.
Given your symptoms and history, it would be advisable to schedule a follow-up appointment with your healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and possibly order imaging studies if necessary to assess the area more thoroughly. This will help determine whether your symptoms are related to the previous laparoscopic surgery or if there is another underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
In summary, while some changes in the umbilical area post-laparoscopic surgery can be normal, persistent symptoms such as discoloration, itching, and discomfort should not be ignored. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure proper evaluation and management of your symptoms. Early intervention can help prevent potential complications and promote better healing outcomes.
