A soft lump outside the anus?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask: In the past two weeks, while cleaning my anus, I noticed a soft protrusion on the inner layer of the skin on the right side of the anal opening.
It is located at the entrance, not inside the anus, and it is neither painful nor itchy, and there is no redness or swelling.
It feels soft and is slightly smaller than a grain of rice.
Could this be a mild hemorrhoid? The color is the same as the surrounding skin with no redness or swelling.
Thank you, doctor.
What could this be?

Dr. Zhang Shuhao reply Surgery
This may be a mild hemorrhoid or a skin tag, especially considering that it is soft, has not caused pain or itching, and shows no signs of redness or swelling.
It is recommended to maintain cleanliness in the anal area, avoid constipation or diarrhea, increase dietary fiber intake, and drink plenty of water.
Additionally, taking warm sitz baths when possible may be beneficial.
If symptoms persist or worsen, please seek medical attention for further evaluation.

More Info
When it comes to soft bumps near the anus, particularly those that are small, soft, and not associated with pain, redness, or swelling, they are often benign in nature. Based on your description, it is possible that the bump you are feeling could be a mild hemorrhoid, also known as an external hemorrhoid. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus that can cause discomfort, but in your case, since you mentioned that it is not painful or itchy, it may not be causing any significant issues.
External hemorrhoids can appear as small lumps or bumps around the anal area. They are typically skin-colored or slightly darker and can vary in size. The fact that you are not experiencing any pain, itching, or other symptoms is a good sign. However, it is essential to monitor the bump for any changes in size, color, or associated symptoms.
In some cases, what you are feeling could also be a skin tag, which is a small, benign growth of skin that can occur in the anal area. Skin tags are usually harmless and do not require treatment unless they become bothersome or irritated.
While it is likely that the bump is benign, it is always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation. A physician can perform a physical examination and may recommend further tests if necessary. They can also provide you with peace of mind by confirming that the bump is not a sign of a more serious condition.
In terms of treatment, if it is indeed a mild hemorrhoid or a skin tag, lifestyle modifications can help manage symptoms. These may include increasing fiber intake to prevent constipation, staying hydrated, and practicing good hygiene. Over-the-counter treatments, such as topical creams or ointments, may also provide relief if you experience any discomfort in the future.
If you notice any changes in the bump, such as increased size, pain, or bleeding, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. These symptoms could indicate a more serious condition that requires further investigation.
In summary, based on your description, the soft bump near your anus is likely a mild hemorrhoid or a skin tag, especially since it is not causing any discomfort. However, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Regular check-ups and being aware of any changes in your body are essential for maintaining good health.
