Balanitis - Medication Issues
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask three questions.
Last month, I visited a doctor and was diagnosed with balanitis.
At that time, most of the glans was purple and dark, with some red areas.
The doctor prescribed me Meikang cream, which I have been using for one month and one week.
The color of the glans has improved by about half; the glans area is now divided into black, red, and skin-colored sections, which is much better compared to a month ago.
1.
How long can Meikang cream be used continuously?
2.
Should I continue using it until the red and black areas disappear?
3.
Initially, I couldn't find Meikang cream and stopped using it for two days during the weekend.
I then used Siyi cream for one day.
Now that I have found Meikang cream, can I continue applying it?

Hello: If you have been using it for a month, you should return for a follow-up appointment to see if it is okay and if you no longer need to use it.
As for the color, it should be compared to the normal state; if it appears reddish, there may still be inflammation.
A follow-up appointment is necessary.
Wishing you good health.

Balanitis, or inflammation of the glans penis, can be a distressing condition that often requires careful management. It’s great to hear that you’ve seen improvement with the use of Mecon Cream (美康乳膏). Let’s address your questions regarding the duration and usage of this medication.
1. How long can Mecon Cream be used continuously?
The duration for which Mecon Cream can be used continuously largely depends on the specific formulation and the underlying cause of the balanitis. Generally, topical corticosteroids like Mecon Cream are recommended for short-term use to avoid potential side effects such as skin thinning or atrophy. Typically, a duration of 2 to 4 weeks is common for such treatments, but your healthcare provider may suggest a longer duration based on your individual response and the severity of your condition. Since you have been using it for about five weeks, it would be wise to consult your doctor before continuing for an extended period.
2. Should you continue using it until the red and black areas disappear?
It is essential to follow your healthcare provider's advice regarding the treatment duration. While it is tempting to continue using the cream until all discoloration resolves, it’s crucial to monitor for any signs of adverse effects. If the red and black areas are improving, it may be a sign that the treatment is effective. However, complete resolution may not always be necessary, and your doctor may recommend tapering off the medication once significant improvement is noted. Regular follow-ups are important to assess the condition and adjust treatment as necessary.
3. Can you switch back to Mecon Cream after using another cream for a day?
If you have used another cream (四溢乳膏) for a day and have now found Mecon Cream, it is generally acceptable to switch back to Mecon Cream, provided that the other cream does not contain any ingredients that could interact negatively with Mecon Cream. However, it is advisable to wait for a short period after using a different product before reapplying Mecon Cream to minimize any potential irritation. Always ensure that the area is clean and dry before applying any topical medication. If you experience any unusual symptoms or irritation, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.
In addition to these points, it’s important to consider the underlying causes of balanitis, which can include infections (bacterial or fungal), irritants, or skin conditions. Maintaining good hygiene, avoiding irritants, and following your doctor’s recommendations are key to preventing recurrence. If symptoms persist or worsen, further evaluation may be necessary to rule out other conditions.
In summary, while Mecon Cream can be effective for treating balanitis, it is essential to use it judiciously and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Regular follow-ups and open communication with your doctor will help ensure the best outcomes for your condition. Always prioritize your health and well-being, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider with any concerns or questions you may have.
